Tribu House by Parnell by ALIVEUS Architecture
Tribu House by Parnell blends showroom and café, featuring curved facades, arched windows, and streamlined design redefining Korean contemporary architecture.
Located in Yongin-si, South Korea, the Tribu House by Parnell is a unique architectural project designed by ALIVEUS architecture in 2021. Spanning 341 m², the building was envisioned as both a domestic showroom for high-end European furniture and a stylish bakery café, merging commercial function with cultural experience.
The client’s vision was clear: they wanted a space that transcended the look of a conventional furniture store, with furnishings naturally integrated into the architectural fabric of both interior and exterior spaces. Additionally, they sought a design language unfamiliar to Korea, rooted in contemporary experimentation while reflecting a personal aesthetic preference for arched windows. Rather than imitating traditional European classical arches, the architects reinterpreted these curves into a modern, streamlined architectural vocabulary.

Over 80% of the building’s exterior is composed of curved surfaces, breaking away from linear architectural norms. These organic forms meet the straight axes of the landscaped site, creating balance between irregularity and stability. The interplay between architecture and landscape extends the showroom beyond the walls, allowing furniture displays to continue seamlessly into outdoor courtyards, patios, and terraces. The façade itself becomes a backdrop, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor design.
The project’s defining design concept—“Streamlined”—originates from the reinterpretation of arches. This theme expands across the façade, roofline, and interiors, culminating in the dramatic circular staircase. Designed with twisted inflection points and a sculptural form, the staircase redefines vertical circulation as an immersive architectural experience. Its shifting spiral creates visual tension while offering novelty for visitors—an element that symbolizes the pinnacle of the design narrative.

Inside, bold material choices amplify the atmosphere. Vintage paint finishes, experimental detailing, and daring design gestures contribute to a layered environment where architecture and furniture design coexist harmoniously. Every detail—whether a curve in the roof, the flow of the staircase, or the integration of display furniture—reflects a pursuit of functional beauty and architectural artistry.
Ultimately, the Tribu House by Parnell is more than a showroom or café; it is a cultural landmark that challenges Korean architectural norms. It provides visitors with an immersive spatial experience, merging hospitality, retail, and art. Through this project, ALIVEUS architecture has introduced a new design language in Korea, one that reimagines tradition through curves, movement, and innovation.
