University of Semnan Auditorium and Library by New Wave Architecture: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation in Iranian Academic Architecture
A contemporary library and auditorium blending Iranian heritage with modern design, promoting learning, culture, and community at Semnan University.
Located in the heart of Semnan, Iran, the University of Semnan Auditorium and Central Library designed by New Wave Architecture represents a landmark of contemporary Iranian architecture. Spanning 14,000 square meters, this visionary educational complex reimagines traditional Persian design motifs through a modern lens, delivering a dynamic and functional space for academic and cultural exchange.

A Cultural Nexus in the Academic Landscape
Designed initially in 2007 and completed in 2023, the project comprises two primary volumes—a multi-purpose auditorium and a central library—connected by a light-filled corridor. This spatial configuration fosters a harmonious flow between the programs while maximizing natural light and enhancing user experience. The building not only accommodates the educational needs of the university but also serves as a cultural and social hub for students, faculty, and the broader community.

Architectural Design Inspired by Iranian Heritage
At the core of the design is a deep reverence for Iranian cultural identity, which is embedded in the building's form and facade. The exterior is adorned with a network of ribbon-like patterns and triangular openings—a contemporary interpretation of traditional Persian geometry. These elements function both aesthetically and environmentally, enabling natural ventilation and daylighting while casting intricate patterns of light and shadow across interior spaces.
The use of Persian blue (turquoise) throughout the design further anchors the building in local heritage. This color, prevalent in Iranian art and architecture, evokes a sense of familiarity and emotional resonance for its users.

Spatial Experience and Interior Dynamics
The architecture employs a sequence of spatial voids and continuous surfaces that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the mountainous landscape of Semnan to visually and symbolically merge with the structure. The fluidity between floors, walls, and ceilings creates immersive transitions and invites exploration. Sweeping staircases not only connect levels but also offer panoramic views of the university campus, reinforcing a sense of place and connectivity.
The interior layout is organized to support both individual learning and collective activities. The spaces are imbued with natural light thanks to carefully positioned geometric apertures, enhancing focus, well-being, and visual comfort.

Program and Functionality
Designed with both academic functionality and community integration in mind, the complex includes:
- A 1000-seat central auditorium for lectures, performances, and conferences
- Two additional training halls with capacities of 200 and 150 seats respectively
- A fully-equipped central library and documentation center
- Meeting rooms, administrative offices, and support facilities
- A public café, offering a social space within the academic context
This multi-use facility promotes interaction, knowledge sharing, and cultural enrichment, embodying the university’s mission of holistic education.

Integration of Technology and Craftsmanship
In addition to its architectural ambition, the project integrates high-performance materials and building systems. Finishes and systems were provided by key manufacturers including Jotun, Knauf, and PMA Ceramic. The project’s mechanical, electrical, and structural systems were meticulously designed by New Wave Architecture, ensuring consistency between technical execution and architectural vision. Construction was carried out by Polband Construction Company.

A New Wave in Iranian Educational Architecture
The University of Semnan Auditorium and Library exemplifies how modern architecture in Iran can respectfully reinterpret traditional motifs to create spaces that are culturally grounded, functionally advanced, and aesthetically compelling. Through its innovative form, sustainable strategies, and human-centered design, the project sets a new standard for educational architecture in the Middle East.
