LUDMILLA CERVENYADD TO COLLECTION

The public funeral home has been a longstanding tradition for communities around the world to come together to mourn and pay their respects to the deceased. In recent years, architects have been challenged with designing funeral homes that not only serve their purpose but also elevate the experience for those in attendance.

Located within the cemetery enclosure, the public funeral home in question opens up to the surrounding wall with a timeless colonnade that sinks into the darkness of the building, below the natural sloping ground level. The design, although raw and precast concrete, surfaces like a large slab among the graves, creating a striking visual presence.

One of the unique features of this funeral home is the vaults of the presentation rooms. These white and soft rooms host the deceased and the observance of its relatives, providing a tranquil and peaceful environment for the grieving process. The spatial treatment of these rooms is particular and stands out as the climax of the liturgical promenade.

As attendees leave the funeral home, they pass through the colonnade once again, this time in the right direction, towards the light. The design allows for a sense of closure and peaceful transition from mourning to acceptance.

In conclusion, the public funeral home serves as an essential gathering place for communities to come together and pay their respects to their loved ones. This design, with its striking colonnade and unique presentation rooms, elevates the experience for those in attendance, allowing for a peaceful transition from grief to acceptance.
