High-density areas in NYC, from Lower Manhattan to Central Park, are home to a bustling subway network. Leveraging the city's unique geography, the Urban Bubble project transforms subway stations into interactive landmarks. By focusing on subway stations near major public spaces, these bubbles become hubs for covering, sharing, and recharging. This innovative concept highlights how urban architecture can harmonize with public transportation systems, creating symbiotic connections between people and spaces.

A Subway Station as a Bubble Station

The subway system plays an irreplaceable role in the daily life of millions of New Yorkers. While the network predominantly operates underground, the Urban Bubble project brings focus to above-ground subway stations. A bubble system with a light frame is introduced to:

  • Provide a visually striking cover for subway station entrances.
  • Offer stations for bubble sharing and recharging, creating interactive landmarks.

In this way, popular subway stations gain a refreshed identity, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes.

A Bubble-Sharing System

The Bubble-Sharing System introduces the concept of renting or borrowing a bubble from one location and returning it to another. These bubbles cater to both New Yorkers and tourists, blending utility with playfulness. Using a dedicated app, users can scan, rent, and customize their bubbles—choosing factors such as temperature, luminance, and chemical elements.

This system builds a network of bubble docks, seamlessly integrated into the subway infrastructure for maximum accessibility.

Multi-Functional Urban Bubbles

  1. Park Settings: Lunchtime in Manhattan often means searching for a place to sit and relax. Bubbles in parks provide comfortable seating options, ranging from individual seats to combined setups for group activities and children’s playgrounds.
  2. Water Features: With NYC surrounded by waterways, bubbles double as aquatic furniture and toys near waterfront subway stations, such as 34th St Station and Rector St Station.
  3. Rainy Weather: Framed bubbles filled with luminous air can illuminate streets while serving as rain covers. These structures create cozy, well-lit spaces, offering a practical and inviting urban solution.
