Urban Commons: Learning & Making Compelling
Bridging urban contrasts through inclusive spaces and landscape continuity.
The Departure Point: Urban Contrasts
My project focuses on Maltepe's Gülsuyu neighborhood, a site marked by a strong urban contrast between informal settlements and gated estates. Situated between the forest and the sea view of the Prince Islands, the main goal was to resolve this spatial and social division. I aimed to achieve this by creating inclusive common spaces that bring different groups of people together.
The Concept: Landscape and Topography
The design uses the concept of "Landscape as Common Ground" Instead of placing a massive block on the sloped terrain, the building volumes are divided and placed on different levels to adapt to the topography. Parts of the structure are embedded into the terrain to preserve the natural landscape, while the roofs transform into green terraces and public open spaces.
The Experience: Connecting Functions and Courtyards
The design establishes a strong relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Courtyards are used not only to bring natural light and fresh air into the building, but also to physically and visually connect different functions across the levels. These outdoor spaces link workshops, local production commons, and co-working areas, creating a continuous public flow where indoor activities seamlessly extend to the outside.
Reflections on the Process
Throughout the design process, the focus was on balancing social programming with technical resolution. Integrating diverse programs, such as construction technologies, local craft commons, and sports facilities into a steep slope required a clear functional layout. This journey documents how a strong conceptual idea can be fully resolved through site-specific planning and precise system details.
