In the 18th district of Paris, a forgotten railway corridor lies dormant, once a vital infrastructure that powered industrial logistics for over 70 years. Now abandoned for decades, this linear void presents a unique opportunity for urban regeneration architecture. The project Incandescence, designed by Xiaozhen Zhang, Tang Yuanyuan, and 祯 方, reimagines this neglected site as a dynamic public space that bridges history, culture, and community.

Shortlisted as part of the Salut Paris competition, the proposal positions itself at the intersection of adaptive reuse, public space design, and socio-economic revitalization.

Urban Context and Site Analysis

The site is embedded within a dense urban fabric, characterized by mixed-use developments, residential blocks, and active transportation networks. Its proximity to subway stations, bus routes, and pedestrian corridors ensures high accessibility, yet the space itself lacks vitality and engagement.

Environmental analysis reveals a favorable climate with distinct seasonal variations, enabling year-round outdoor programming. However, the absence of spatial activation and fragmented movement patterns has resulted in underutilization.

  • High pedestrian potential due to surrounding density
  • Lack of identity and visual cohesion
  • Opportunity for cultural and commercial integration

Design Concept: Incandescence

The concept of “incandescence” extends beyond physical illumination. It represents a symbolic reactivation of the site, igniting both spatial and social energy. The design leverages light, movement, and modularity to transform the railway into a vibrant urban spine.

Inspired by the industrial heritage of the railway, the proposal integrates nostalgic elements such as vintage markets, locomotives, and retro aesthetics, creating a layered narrative between past and present.

Spatial Strategy and Urban Regeneration Approach

The linear nature of the site is addressed through strategic interventions that enhance permeability and connectivity. North-south connections are introduced to break the rigidity of the railway alignment, allowing fluid movement across the site.

Key strategies include:

  • Creating multiple access points to increase permeability
  • Reinforcing the linear identity through lighting interventions
  • Activating nodes with programmatic diversity

The introduction of red neon lighting along the rails not only enhances nighttime visibility but also establishes a strong visual identity, turning infrastructure into an experiential element.

At night, lighting becomes the defining feature. Illuminated rails, performance stages, and vibrant installations create an immersive atmosphere. Movable cubes serve as seating and stage elements, supporting events such as concerts and festivals.

The contrast between day and night programming ensures continuous activation and maximizes the site’s usability.

Sustainable and Cost-Effective Design

The project adopts a pragmatic approach to sustainability by reusing existing materials and infrastructure. Discarded cargo containers and industrial remnants are repurposed, reducing construction costs and environmental impact.
