Vilela II, designed by the renowned Estudio Planta in Argentina, represents a sophisticated continuation of the studio’s previous residential project, Vilela I. Located in the same urban context but conceived twelve years later, Vilela II thoughtfully addresses the challenges of continuity, innovation, and durability in contemporary apartment design. Lead architect Fernanda Torres guided the project, balancing functional living spaces with enduring aesthetic solutions.

Harmonizing Continuity and Innovation

The primary design question for Vilela II was whether to simply extend the architectural language of Vilela I or reinterpret it to suit modern living requirements. Despite its proximity to the earlier project, the team opted to evolve key elements while maintaining a subtle dialogue with the past. The most notable continuation is the integration of ceramic tiles and planters, now meticulously designed to resist corrosion. This strategic material choice ensures longevity while slightly reducing soil volume and preserving a clean, modern visual appeal.

Diverse Residential Typologies

Vilela II accommodates three distinct apartment typologies, all organized around a central internal courtyard. Each unit faces either the street front or the courtyard, optimizing natural light and ventilation. At the client’s request, the landscaping focuses on shrubs rather than climbing plants, enhancing privacy while maintaining a low-maintenance design. The window design incorporates safety bars positioned only at the base of each span, creating unobstructed views and a sense of openness.

Thoughtful Use of Materials and Space

The internal courtyard, fully constructed in exposed concrete, serves as both a social and visual anchor for the building. Every window is complemented by purpose-built planters, continuing the theme of greenery and outdoor connection. The design merges robust materials with subtle, human-centered detailing, demonstrating Estudio Planta’s commitment to functional, sustainable, and visually cohesive architecture.

Architectural Significance

Vilela II exemplifies how contemporary apartment architecture can respect its urban context while introducing thoughtful updates. By revisiting and refining ideas from a previous project, the design achieves a balance between continuity and innovation. The project highlights the importance of material durability, internal courtyard planning, and landscape integration in modern residential architecture.
