A Thoughtful Design Rooted in Nature
Villa A, designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects, exemplifies a harmonious blend of sustainability, energy efficiency, and a deep respect for nature. Nestled within the dunes of Aerdenhout and adjacent to the protected Natura2000 nature reserve, this energy-neutral residence prioritizes ecological sensitivity while delivering luxurious residential comfort.
The villa’s design is inspired by its natural surroundings, creating a seamless connection between indoor living spaces and the forested environment. With a careful layout that preserves the two large Scots pines on site, Villa A demonstrates an organic architectural approach that minimizes environmental impact.

Floating Volumes and Organic Flow
One of the villa’s most striking features is its floating glass volume. Twisted and elevated, this section of the house hovers above the landscape, supported by two dramatic overhangs. The design preserves the site’s mature trees and allows the villa to flow organically within the natural terrain.
A gently sloping landform connects this floating volume to the garden below, integrating children’s living spaces within the lower level. Strategic incisions in the landscape reduce interference with the environment while providing high-quality, light-filled interiors.

Interior Spaces Designed for Connection
Villa A is a two-story residence, combining one above-ground level with a subterranean floor.
- Upper Level: Accessible through a transparent entry hall and a floating staircase, the upper level includes a spacious living room, a centrally located kitchen with a dining area, a study, and a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. Each room is oriented to offer unique views of the surrounding forest, providing a living experience among the treetops.
- Subterranean Level: The lower floor contains multiple bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a utility room, and ample storage. Walls, floors, and ceilings are cast in place with minimal finishing, emphasizing natural materials such as oak.
The villa’s interior showcases refined materiality, combining functionality with elegance. Generous natural light, reflective surfaces, and minimalistic finishes emphasize the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Integration with the Landscape
The villa’s reflective glass façade mirrors the lush greenery, enhancing the visual connection with the surrounding forest. The building is fully integrated into the undulating landscape, with terraces, pool areas, and access roads constructed using the same material palette as the villa. Canopy edges at the top and bottom of the volume create a floating illusion, making the house appear detached yet harmoniously connected to its environment.

Energy-Neutral and Sustainable Design
Villa A is a model of sustainable residential design:
- Energy Efficiency: The villa’s ground-integrated construction, triple-glass insulation, heat pumps, and solar panels enable energy-neutral operation.
- Green Roof: The biodiverse rooftop collects rainwater and supports local wildlife, offering habitats for birds, bats, and bees.
- Construction Practices: Built with steel and wood using mostly electric construction equipment and nitrogen-free processes, the villa minimizes its carbon footprint.
The thoughtful integration of technology, materials, and environmental stewardship demonstrates how luxury living can coexist with ecological responsibility.

Experience Villa A
Villa A by Paul de Ruiter Architects is not just a home; it’s a living dialogue with nature, combining sophisticated design, sustainable innovation, and serene forest surroundings. Every aspect—from floating volumes and reflective façades to energy-neutral technologies—reinforces a vision of modern, environmentally conscious living.
