Set against the dramatic landscape of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, WA One Lakes Houses by Elias + Vermaasen Arquitectos Asociados is a thoughtful residential development that blurs the boundaries between architecture and nature. The project comprises three distinct modules oriented at varied levels and angles, each offering a unique perspective on the shimmering lake below.

Concept and Site Integration

The architects were deeply inspired by the rarity of lake views from the street level in Bariloche. Their guiding principle became one of minimal intervention—preserving existing sightlines, working with the land’s natural topography, and channeling the existing stream without obstruction. This led to the creation of a design where the structures blend seamlessly with the landscape, appearing almost as extensions of the terrain.

Architectural Strategy

A minimalist approach defines the architectural language, treating the buildings as open frames that spotlight the real protagonists: the surrounding vegetation, the lake, and the sky. Constructed from reinforced concrete, glass, and wood, the palette emphasizes durability, minimal maintenance, and an aesthetic that dissolves into the natural backdrop.

Green terraces and buried volumes were used to maintain the site's original slopes and enhance thermal insulation. Roofs are planted with native species, increasing the permeable surface area and contributing to sustainability while visually merging with the environment.

Sustainability and Materials

The use of passive design principles was critical in reducing energy consumption. Excellent insulation, native vegetation, and careful placement of the units enable thermal efficiency. The structural system employs locally sourced, low-impact materials, while the construction method ensures a long life cycle and reduced upkeep.

Community and Amenities

Envisioned as a tourist retreat, WA One Lakes Houses also features thoughtfully designed common areas. Private terraces, lookouts, a lakeside deck with a fireplace, solarium, sauna, gym, and pool create shared experiences while maintaining a strong connection with the natural surroundings.

Modular Units

Each of the three modules accommodates two to four people and is strategically positioned to maximize views, privacy, and comfort. The modular design allows future replication across other sites without compromising the environmental ethos or the design integrity.
