Wabi-Sabi Residence by Sparano + Mooney Architecture
Wabi-Sabi Residence in Emigration Canyon blends cantilevered volumes, cedar cladding, and sustainable design, embracing nature, simplicity, and timeless Japanese aesthetics.
The Wabi-Sabi Residence by Sparano + Mooney Architecture is a stunning example of contemporary residential design harmonizing with Utah’s rugged landscapes. Perched above Salt Lake City in Emigration Canyon, the home was designed for a young family seeking a direct connection to nature while celebrating the region’s dramatic mountain vistas. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which embraces imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity, the residence reflects honesty in materials, modest expression, and the natural beauty of aging surfaces.

Architectural Concept
The residence is conceived as a dialogue between static and dynamic elements, referencing the relationships among mountains, vegetation, and wildlife. The design divides the home into two cantilevered volumes that float above the canyon landscape:
- North Volume: Oriented east-west, housing private, domestic functions while framing tranquil mountain views.
- Southwest Volume: Dedicated to public and active spaces, aligned along the canyon axis to maximize dramatic natural and urban panoramas.
The separation of volumes enhances the indoor-outdoor connection, allowing residents to experience the surrounding nature from unique, framed perspectives.

Materials & Sustainability
The exterior is clad in full-height vertical cedar boards, sorted on-site to minimize waste. Large-format tiles are laid in a stack bond pattern across corridors and patios to maximize coverage and reduce material loss. This thoughtful material approach extends to interiors, including furniture, fixtures, and finishes, emphasizing sustainability and durability.
Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the home integrates:
- Operable windows for natural ventilation and improved indoor air quality
- A vegetated roof with native grasses, blending the home into its surroundings
- Landscaping with drought-tolerant and native plants, ensuring minimal environmental impact

Spatial Experience
Inside, the residence balances functionality and aesthetic simplicity. Exposed beams, natural light, and carefully curated furnishings reflect the wabi-sabi philosophy, creating a serene, contemplative environment. The home’s careful siting, cantilevered forms, and use of natural materials allow it to coexist harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, embodying a sustainable and contextually sensitive approach to modern living.

Recognition
Sparano + Mooney Architecture is known for pushing the boundaries of design across the American West, including residential, cultural, and public projects. The Wabi-Sabi Residence exemplifies their dedication to thoughtful, innovative architecture that balances aesthetics, sustainability, and context.
