Walferdange Residences: Modern Village Living in Harmony with Heritage
Walferdange Residences blends contemporary design with village heritage, featuring staggered volumes, rhythmic façades, sunlit interiors, and communal outdoor spaces.
In Walferdange, Luxembourg, dagli + atélier d’architecture designed a 4,500 m² contemporary project completed in 2024. Led by Turkan Nies Dagli, the design emphasizes functional elegance, integrating high-quality materials and fixtures from JUNG, Grohe, Clou, Euval, and Schüco. Photography by Lorenzo Zandri captures the building’s refined, modern aesthetic.

Contextual Design Inspired by Local Heritage
Nestled in the picturesque village of Walferdange, the Walferdange Residences comprise 14 thoughtfully designed housing units. The project draws inspiration from the distinctive roofscape of Helmsange, reflecting the rhythmic interplay of local rooftops and the subtle movements of human life. Rather than replicating traditional forms, the architects reinterpreted the surrounding context, creating a contemporary arrangement of staggered volumes that respond harmoniously to the village fabric.
The design prioritizes a dialogue with its environment, respecting historic silhouettes while contributing a fresh, modern expression to the evolving skyline. Each façade and roofline is intentionally varied, producing a dynamic architectural rhythm that mirrors the organic tempo of the street and daily life in Walferdange.

Movement, Rhythm, and Architectural Expression
At the heart of the project is the philosophy that a residence is not static—it exists in motion. The architects infused this concept of movement and rhythm into both the overall form and the façades. Varying rooflines, shifting volumes, and subtle architectural gestures create a visual tempo, transforming the buildings into a contemporary “fifth façade” that engages the street edge.
This approach redefines the traditional relationship between private and public space, allowing the residences to harmoniously blend with the village while contributing a modern, fluid character to the urban landscape.

Sensitive Integration with the Village Fabric
One of the primary challenges was integrating new architecture into a dense, historically sensitive village. Achieving this balance required careful attention to scale, proportion, and materiality, ensuring that the residences feel part of the community without overshadowing it.
The project utilizes timeless materials such as plaster, timber, and metal, selected for their tactile quality and ability to age gracefully. This material palette reinforces continuity with local traditions while maintaining a refined, contemporary finish.

Interior Experience and Social Connectivity
The 14 housing units are arranged along a sunlit central spine, serving both as circulation and a social connector. This layout encourages interaction while maintaining privacy, linking private living spaces with terraces and outdoor areas. Interiors are designed for light, openness, and seamless flow, creating inviting spaces that feel connected to the outdoors.
At the rear, a shared communal garden provides a multifunctional landscape for planting, relaxation, and social gatherings. This outdoor space strengthens community engagement, transforming the residences into more than just homes—they become places of connection and belonging.

A Contemporary Dialogue with Place
Walferdange Residences exemplify a design approach that engages with the local context, celebrates human interaction, and blends tradition with modernity. Far from mimicry, the project prioritizes authenticity, sustainability, and social living, establishing a vibrant, rhythmic, and functional residential environment in the heart of Luxembourg.
