Wimbledon House By Manuel Urbina Studio: Modern Heritage Family Living in Wimbledon Village, UK

Nestled in the heart of Wimbledon Village, the Wimbledon House project by Manuel Urbina Studio redefines contemporary family living within a historic context. Completed in 2025, this residential extension demonstrates how thoughtful design can harmoniously balance heritage architecture with modern functionality, creating spectacular spaces that celebrate both tradition and innovation.

The site’s rear garden gently slopes towards the iconic Wimbledon tennis lawns, a view central to the design vision. The clients envisioned a bold, contemporary extension that would respect the character of their original home while offering an elevated, elegant, and functional living environment. The design achieves a careful balance, with spatial planning that mirrors daily family routines and encourages natural flow between rooms.

Materiality and Design: The extension employs white handmade clay Roman bricks, chosen for their long-format, linear profile, creating a dialogue between the old and new structures. Brick pillars and beams define an intimate courtyard, while carefully positioned openings frame the landscape and provide shade during summer. Crittall-style windows enhance the contemporary aesthetic without disrupting the heritage character of the property.

The sloping site presented significant design challenges, particularly regarding terrace heights and neighbourly sightlines. The studio collaborated closely with local authorities to preserve views and privacy, integrating strategic landscape screening that maintains the property’s connection to its surroundings.

Wimbledon House exemplifies how modern architecture can enhance historical settings. Every material, from brickwork to fenestration, was meticulously selected, and spatial planning prioritizes both comfort and visual experience. The result is a daring yet respectful home where modern design elevates heritage living, providing a luxurious and functional environment for family life.
