Wuzhen Vessel Hotel Façade Design by workshopXZ: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Chinese Maritime Heritage
Wuzhen Vessel Hotel blends traditional Chinese motifs with modern parametric façades, innovative curtain walls, and immersive waterfront luxury experiences
Located along the historic Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in Jiaxing, China, the Wuzhen Vessel Hotel stands as a landmark of contemporary hospitality architecture. Designed by workshopXZ, this expansive 84,124 m² hotel, completed in 2023, offers 493 luxury rooms, diverse dining experiences, and state-of-the-art fitness facilities, making it the largest hotel in the Wuzhen Scenic Area.
Inspired by the form of a traditional Chinese barque moored in a harbor, the Wuzhen Vessel Hotel masterfully blends ancient Chinese motifs with modern architectural technologies, creating a visually striking yet culturally grounded design. Lead architect Zijie Cao and the workshopXZ team have realized a project that celebrates both history and innovation, situating the hotel as a contemporary icon along one of China’s last remaining waterside settlements.

Parametric Façade Design: Waves, Sails, and Light
The hotel's façade design is a showcase of parametric architecture, capturing the poetic imagery of rippling water and billowing sails. On the podium, bamboo-finished aluminum shading louvers emulate gentle waves caressing the hull, while the tower’s grey parametric louvers reflect the rising movement of sails. This dynamic interplay of light, shadow, color, and depth creates a living façade that shifts throughout the day, offering guests a constantly evolving visual experience.

Innovative Curtain Wall Systems
Curtain wall innovation plays a central role in the Wuzhen Vessel Hotel’s architectural expression. The tower features a dual-unit curtain wall system, integrating inner glass panels with outer honeycomb-structured aluminum louvers. This combination enhances construction efficiency, precision, and aesthetic impact. Additional curtain wall types, including frit-pattern glass, stone honeycomb panels, aluminum boards, zinc roofs, and diverse canopies, enrich the architectural language, ensuring each elevation contributes to the hotel's immersive design narrative.

Outdoor Infinity Pool and Experiential Spaces
A highlight of the hotel is the cantilevered outdoor infinity pool, extending from the "deck" and offering guests the sensation of swimming above the historic canal town, where water and sky seem to merge. As dusk falls, a sophisticated panoramic lighting scheme evokes the serene atmosphere of fishing fires and solitary sails, blending natural beauty with architectural poetry.

Cultural Integration Meets Modern Luxury
The Wuzhen Vessel Hotel demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respect historical context while embracing modern construction methods. Its parametric façade, innovative curtain walls, and immersive guest experiences embody a thoughtful synthesis of tradition, technology, and hospitality design. This project not only elevates the Wuzhen Scenic Area but also establishes a benchmark for future waterfront hotel developments in China.
