Located in the vibrant coastal town of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, the Xiqué Boutique Hotel by Estudio Carroll redefines luxury hospitality through a thoughtful blend of environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and innovative architectural design. Completed in 2023, this 620 m² boutique hotel on a 278 m² plot features eight elegantly designed rooms, a ground-floor restaurant, and a rooftop terrace with a panoramic pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Architecture That Inspires and Connects

At Estudio Carroll, architecture is more than structure—it is a catalyst for joy, harmony, and community transformation. The design philosophy behind Xiqué Boutique Hotel challenges conventional boundaries to create spaces that elevate the human spirit while celebrating local culture. The hotel’s curvilinear forms, inspired by the elegance of the female body, provide a visually fluid aesthetic that complements the surrounding natural environment.

Strategic Design Principles: Orientation, Airflow, and Sustainability

The architectural strategy of Xiqué Boutique Hotel prioritizes passive climate solutions and user comfort. Key design principles include:

  • Orientation: The main south-facing façade shields the hotel from intense heat, while west-facing rooms capture breathtaking views of the ocean and lush surroundings.
  • Airflow: Open west façades with palm bone doors encourage natural ventilation, while strategically placed grills and a central staircase create a chimney effect that removes hot air efficiently.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Nature-based solutions (NBS) guide the project’s ecological approach, from preserving existing trees to integrating wetland systems that naturally treat wastewater, replicating processes found in mangroves and marshes.

Nature-Based Solutions and Biodiversity

The hotel layout preserves an almost 100 m² free area, allowing native vegetation to thrive. Wetland systems create a lush garden and terrace, enhancing the guest experience while promoting biodiversity and reducing environmental impact. This innovative approach demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development and responsible tourism, positioning Xiqué Boutique Hotel as a model of eco-conscious hospitality in Puerto Escondido.

Materials Reflecting Local Culture

Every material choice reinforces the connection to the region:

  • Earth-pink Chukum: Covers most surfaces, providing passive cooling and waterproofing.
  • Palm Bone: Used in lattices, doors, and railings, reflecting local craftsmanship.
  • Macuil Wood: Elegantly harvested and used for interior finishes.
  • Clay Tiles: Highlight details while enhancing exterior floors.

These materials not only ensure durability and climate responsiveness but also celebrate the region’s cultural and artisanal traditions.

A Harmonious Blend of Functionality and Aesthetics

The hotel’s fluid forms maximize livable space while preserving natural vegetation. The careful layout of rooms, services, and circulation pathways ensures functional flow and comfort, creating a serene environment that encourages guests to relax and connect with nature. The rooftop terrace and infinity pool provide an unforgettable vantage point to enjoy sunsets over the Pacific, reinforcing the hotel’s ethos of harmony, luxury, and environmental integration.

Experience Xiqué Boutique Hotel

Xiqué Boutique Hotel exemplifies a new standard in sustainable luxury hospitality, combining architectural elegance, cultural identity, and ecological responsibility. Every element—from the material palette to the fluid shapes and natural ventilation—reflects a commitment to inspiring spaces that uplift, transform, and harmonize with the Mexican coastal landscape.
