Located in the vibrant Buiksloterham district of Amsterdam, the YCON Residential Building by renowned Dutch firm Studioninedots redefines sustainable urban living. Completed in 2023, this innovative five-story residential project is part of the circular urban development Cityplot, championing adaptability, green living, and environmental consciousness.

Architecture That Embraces Nature

YCON’s design embodies a visionary approach to sustainable architecture. Developed "from the outside in," the building’s most striking feature is its green, staggered facade—a series of stacked gardens and outdoor rooms that serve as extensions of each residence. These lush vertical landscapes aren’t just decorative; they actively contribute to urban biodiversity, air purification, and natural cooling, while providing residents with serene private retreats amidst the cityscape.

Flexible Outdoor Living Spaces

The architects envisioned the outdoor rooms as fully functional living areas adaptable to changing weather and daylight. Each space features storey-high, folding glass walls, allowing residents to fully open or enclose the space as needed. Whether for morning coffee or evening gatherings, these rooms become the most beloved corners of the home, blurring the line between indoor comfort and outdoor serenity.

Ecological Design Meets Circular Construction

YCON is built using prefabricated, demountable concrete elements, aligning with the principles of circular architecture. This method not only reduces construction waste but also enables potential future disassembly and material reuse. Beneath the facade gardens lies a sunken soil layer, robust enough to sustain native plant species, flowers, and even edible vegetation, supporting both urban agriculture and biodiversity.

To further enhance ecological efficiency, the roof of YCON captures and stores rainwater for garden irrigation, easing the burden on Amsterdam’s sewage infrastructure while ensuring year-round greenery.

Shared Spaces and Community-Focused Living

The building houses 12 contemporary apartments along with a communal green courtyard on the ground floor, complete with bicycle storage, encouraging car-free, sustainable living. The layout encourages community interaction, while each unit benefits from privacy and a strong connection to nature.

YCON's sunny, waterfront orientation ensures the greenery on its facade will grow even more vibrant over time, making it a living part of the urban landscape. The use of robust materials complements the area’s post-industrial context, resulting in a project that feels both rooted in place and forward-looking.
