Cliff House by LI WENXI Architects: A Geometric Dialogue with the Mountain Landscape of Shiyan, China

Nestled in the remote mountains of Yunxi County, Shiyan, the Cliff House by LI WENXI Architects is a poetic architectural response to rugged topography, raw materiality, and introspective living. Completed in 2023, this 450-square-meter residence emerges not just from the landscape but in conversation with it—both geometrically and spiritually.

The project began with a simple email from a client based in Dongguan who wished to build a home in his mountainous hometown. Despite logistical challenges—difficult terrain, sparse population, and the architect’s Tokyo-based practice—the site’s dramatic cliff face captivated lead architect Wenxi Li. That singular geological feature became the emotional and conceptual anchor for the entire design.

Design Rooted in Geology and Geometry

The house is sculpted into a hillside carved by the client himself, revealing a monumental cliff wall with a texture akin to a weathered palmprint. This natural backdrop inspired the project’s core spatial and material strategies.

Responding to the terrain’s unique geometry, the structure twists and turns, forming angular and curved walls that echo the contours of the mountains. The second floor arcs gently in response to the landscape, while beams jut dramatically from the north and south elevations—appearing to grow organically from the rock.

On the north, a narrow garden hugs the cliff edge, while the south-facing elevation opens up to panoramic mountain views. At the heart of the home is a conical meditation space illuminated only by two circular windows and a central skylight. This introspective chamber is a quiet counterpoint to the home's expansive gestures toward nature.

Four Forms, Four Philosophies

The design is guided by four elemental forms—Square, Circle, Triangle, and Turning Line—each representing a distinct spatial and symbolic function:

Square: the regular rhythm of life—living and sleeping areas.
Circle: sensuous portals—entrances and skylights.
Triangle: mountain-inspired volumes—meditative, inward-facing.
Turning Line: the enclosing gesture—walls that negotiate between structure and site.

This abstract formal language is not purely symbolic—it fosters a deep resonance with the surrounding mountains, translating natural contours into architectural volumes.

Materiality: The Beauty of the Unrefined

Concrete, the primary material, is left unpolished—embracing its raw, stone-like origin. LI WENXI challenges modern preferences for smooth, refined surfaces by highlighting the natural coarseness of the material, aligning it more authentically with the mountainous context. Within this robust shell, moments of delicacy emerge: a persimmon tree frames the entry, and sunlight slices between beams, casting ephemeral patterns throughout the interior.

This balance between coarseness and precision, mass and light, underscores the house’s quiet power.

A Meditative Home, a Delayed Gratification

Four years in the making, Cliff House is the third independent residence by LI WENXI Architects and reflects a journey that spans 15 years of architectural exploration. “Architecture is an art of delayed gratification,” says Wenxi Li. And in this project, the delay has yielded a house that is not just built on a cliff—but built with its spirit.
