Wannabe Photography Studio: A Transformation by Manu Pagès Taller d'Arquitectura
Wannabe Photography Studio in Barcelona transforms an old surfboard workshop into a bright, minimalist, and functional photography space with natural light.
Revitalizing an Industrial Space in Poblenou, Barcelona
Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Poblenou, Barcelona, Wannabe Photography Studio is a remarkable transformation of an old surfboard workshop into a modern, functional photography studio. Designed by Manu Pagès Taller d'Arquitectura, this project blends industrial heritage with contemporary aesthetics, optimizing natural light and open space to create the perfect environment for photography professionals.

From Surfboards to Studio: A Vision Takes Shape
The project began with an unexpected phone call—one that led to a dynamic, hands-on renovation process. What was once a narrow, dark, and cluttered workspace has now evolved into a bright, spacious, and versatile photography studio. The challenge was to repurpose the existing industrial structure while enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Design Strategy: Enhancing Space and Light
Originally, the workshop featured a long and narrow entry leading to a square-shaped inner courtyard. A loft structure, built within this larger space, limited both natural ventilation and light. To address these issues, the architects took bold steps:
- Structural Optimization: Several unnecessary pillars were removed to create unobstructed shooting angles.
- Natural Light Maximization: Generous skylights were integrated into the roof, flooding the interior with daylight.
- Spatial Organization: The loft structure was reconfigured to improve openness while ensuring stability.
- Functional Minimalism: Custom-built storage cabinets were incorporated to keep equipment organized, maintaining a clean, clutter-free environment.

A Monochromatic Canvas for Creativity
Recognizing the need for a versatile, neutral backdrop, the entire space was painted white—a deliberate choice to enhance light diffusion and provide a blank canvas for photography. This minimalist approach not only aligns with the practical demands of a studio but also accentuates the industrial character of the space.

A Flexible Studio for Modern Creatives
Designed to be rented out for various photography and film projects, Wannabe Photography Studio is a testament to adaptive reuse in urban architecture. By preserving the building’s raw industrial charm while optimizing it for creative professionals, Manu Pagès Taller d'Arquitectura has successfully merged heritage with contemporary function.
