16 Crimson Unfold Apartment: A Mid-Century Modern Home Reimagined for Contemporary Living
16 Crimson Unfold Apartment by Wuuu Studio reimagines mid-century modern design with bold colors, open-concept spaces, rich materials, and functional elegance.
Located in Malaysia, the 16 Crimson Unfold Apartment by Wuuu Studio is a masterful reinterpretation of mid-century modern design, thoughtfully adapted for modern urban living. Covering 1,500 square feet, this 2025 residential project, led by architect Dom Tee, harmonizes bold colors, refined materials, and fluid spatial planning to transform a compact apartment into an open, vibrant, and highly functional home.

At its core, the design celebrates mid-century modern aesthetics, infusing the interiors with playful yet sophisticated touches of red, blue, and yellow. These vibrant tones do more than add color—they create warmth, character, and a sense of joyful nostalgia, transforming everyday living into an experience steeped in optimism and energy. The apartment’s interiors are both a tribute to classic mid-century design and a forward-thinking exploration of contemporary lifestyle needs.

Spatial Planning and Open Living In response to Malaysia’s high-density urban environment, Wuuu Studio prioritized spatial efficiency and openness. The original apartment layout was reimagined to maximize light, air, and social connectivity. Walls separating the living, dining, and kitchen areas were removed to create a fluid open-concept space. This design not only enhances the perception of space but encourages interaction and a sense of generosity, making the home feel larger than its actual footprint.

Upstairs, the transformation continues with innovative solutions for compact living. A traditional bedroom was converted into a walk-in wardrobe, expanding the primary suite’s functionality while enhancing the sense of airiness and luxury. Such subtle interventions exemplify the project’s commitment to thoughtful, human-centered design.

Entrance and Visual Experience The apartment’s entrance acts as a carefully choreographed transitional moment. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s “compression and release” philosophy, the foyer envelops visitors in an intense red hue, creating a sense of intimacy before opening into the calm, neutral beige of the main living area. This contrast between vibrant and muted palettes establishes a dynamic visual rhythm, allowing the home’s curated objects to shine as understated yet expressive details.

Materiality and Texture The apartment’s material palette is rooted in mid-century sensibilities, balancing warmth, texture, and modernity. Stained plywood with deep red undertones provides tactile richness, while stainless steel accents in refined hairline textures bring clarity and contrast. This interplay is particularly evident in the staircase, where custom-bent steel railings float like sculptural ribbons, balancing softness and strength.

Texture plays a central role in enhancing the sensory experience. From ALPI wood veneer grains to the soft matte finish of &Tradition Flowerpot VP1 lighting, every surface contributes to a layered, poetic visual language. These details elevate daily life, making the home as aesthetically enriching as it is functional.

Philosophy and Functionality Beyond its striking aesthetics, the design embodies the enduring mid-century principle that form follows function. Every element—from spatial flow to furniture selection—is purposeful, creating harmony between style and practicality. The result is a home that is visually compelling, intelligently planned, and deeply attuned to modern living needs.
