The ABF Maria Manetti Shrem Educational Center in Florence stands as a landmark project by Alvisi Kirimoto + Partners, designed to redefine pediatric educational spaces within hospital environments. Completed in 2024 and promoted by the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, the center enhances the academic, creative, and emotional well-being of hospitalized children through architecture grounded in nature, music, and sensory experience. Nestled within the Meyer Hospital complex, this innovative educational pavilion supports the ABF H-LABS program, which focuses on providing high-quality learning opportunities for young patients in challenging healthcare contexts.

Conceived as a serene and uplifting haven, the building offers a peaceful, technology-enhanced environment that ensures continuity in education while enriching daily life for boys and girls undergoing care. Through a collaborative network including ABF, Meyer Hospital, Fondazione Meyer, Istituti Scolastici, and partners in pet therapy, clown therapy, and music therapy, the center acts as a dynamic hub of creativity, healing, and discovery.

A Pavilion Immersed in Greenery and Designed for Sensory Engagement

Set within a gently sloping garden on the northern edge of the hospital grounds, the educational center is strategically positioned between the main hospital building and the historic Medici walls along Via di Careggi. This lush landscape offers natural spaces for outdoor learning, play, and exploration.

The architecture is defined by a lightweight, upward-curving roof that echoes the organic movement of nature while visually connecting to the hospital’s contemporary expansion. Beneath this canopy, the pavilion’s transparent glass façade opens to 360-degree views of sensory gardens redesigned to include play areas, activity spaces, and a school garden. Architect Massimo Alvisi describes the structure as a “light leaf suspended between sky and greenery,” transforming the exterior landscape into an open-air classroom where children learn among trees, greenhouses, games, and history.

A Flexible, Sustainable Floor Plan Shaped by Light and Protection

The rectangular layout, formed by two crescent-shaped volumes, is engineered to filter natural light, regulate heat, and protect interior spaces from radiation—strengthening sustainability and comfort. At its core lies the project’s symbolic heart: a circular music laboratory designed as an acoustic “carillon.” This oval space hosts concerts, screenings, theater performances, and conferences, all supported by advanced acoustic engineering, micro-perforated ceilings, and curved sound-absorbing surfaces.

A central visual corridor opens a connection between the hospital and the garden, making the laboratory both a focal point and a transparent passage between healing and nature.

Spaces for Creativity, Technology, and Holistic Education

Encircling the music laboratory is a sequence of specialized areas supporting a wide range of activities. The western wing hosts the Coding and STEM Area, equipped for robotics, virtual reality, and immersive digital learning. Nearby, the Digital and Reading Area integrates advanced learning technologies with a quiet library space for individual and small-group study.

To the east, the Art and Science Laboratory encourages hands-on experimentation in artistic and scientific fields, with opportunities for activities to flow into the outdoor landscape. Adjacent to this zone is the Adult Space, dedicated to educators, families, and private meetings, while a nearby warehouse leads to technical areas and the accessible rooftop green system.

A Transparent Connector Linking Hospital Life and Learning

A light-filled connector volume, constructed with a double-glazed façade, serves as the entrance while maintaining year-round visual and physical continuity with the hospital. Acting as both corridor and climate-controlled threshold, this space ensures seamless daily access for young patients.

Materially, the pavilion contrasts reinforced concrete cores—used for seismic safety—with slender steel pillars and roof elements that create a sense of openness and weightlessness. Automated shading systems improve thermal comfort while preserving transparency and natural illumination.
