Ace Hotel Toronto by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects: A Fusion of Local Culture and Global Hospitality
Ace Hotel Toronto by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects blends adaptive reuse, local culture, and immersive interiors, creating a timeless, community-focused boutique hotel experience.
Ace Hotel Toronto, designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, represents the brand’s first Canadian property. The hotel embodies a seamless blend of local cultural identity and the globally recognized Ace ethos—creativity, curiosity, empathy, and immersive hospitality. This iconic project reimagines an industrial building, creating a civic space where Torontonians and visitors can connect, explore, and make memories.

Design Concept: Adaptive Reuse and Timelessness
The design process began with a deep exploration of existing Ace properties worldwide. Shim-Sutcliffe Architects collaborated closely with Atelier Ace, studying previous sites to fully understand the brand experience. These visits informed the design of Ace Hotel Toronto, emphasizing adaptive reuse, community engagement, and a timeless architectural presence.
The goal was to design a building that felt inherently Canadian, yet universally welcoming. Instead of showcasing newness, the structure evokes a sense of historical layering, as though it had naturally evolved into a hotel over time. The adaptive reuse approach not only preserves the industrial character of the original building but also enriches the surrounding neighborhood.

Interior Design: Sensory and Material Experience
At the heart of Ace Hotel Toronto’s interior is a deliberate material palette that cultivates intuitive and sensory experiences. Custom furniture, bespoke lighting, and integrated hardware create a tactile and visually compelling environment. Each element is carefully orchestrated to harmonize with the city’s rhythm and character, offering visitors a fresh perspective on Toronto’s urban fabric.
Lighting design plays a critical role in shaping the ambiance of public and private spaces, ensuring a rich, layered, and immersive experience. From bedrooms to communal areas, every corner reflects thoughtful craftsmanship, warmth, and sophistication.

Spaces for Community and Connection
Ace Hotel Toronto is designed as a civic hub, a space that transcends mere accommodation. Public areas encourage interaction, creativity, and engagement, making it a destination for both locals and travelers. Stairs, arches, handrails, and exposed beams recall the building’s industrial past while fostering a contemporary, welcoming atmosphere.
The hotel also features intimate bedrooms, cozy gathering areas, and functional spaces that balance comfort and style. The integration of wood, brick, and metal details reinforces the tactile quality of the interiors, creating an environment that is simultaneously modern, authentic, and immersive.

Architecture and Craftsmanship
Shim-Sutcliffe Architects’ design ethos prioritizes a fully integrated experience, blending architecture, furniture, lighting, and interiors seamlessly. The combination of artisanal craftsmanship, adaptive reuse strategies, and locally inspired materials elevates Ace Hotel Toronto into a design landmark. Every decision—from the hand-selected materials to custom fixtures—enhances the guest experience while preserving the building’s historical integrity.
Ace Hotel Toronto is more than a hotel; it is a celebration of Toronto’s industrial heritage, a hub for creativity, and a space where memories are made.
