Activity Center of Taikang Community Yan Garden: A Senior Living Landmark in Beijing
The Taikang Community Yan Garden Activity Center in Beijing blends fluid architecture, nature integration, barrier-free design, and rooftop gardens for senior wellness.
Located in the serene Changping District of Beijing, the Activity Center of Taikang Community Yan Garden, designed by Sunlay Design Group in collaboration with Fangwei Architect, stands as a pioneering model for modern senior living communities. Spanning an area of 11,800 m² and completed in 2023, the center reflects the philosophy of a microcity for the elderly, blending healthcare, lifestyle, and recreational needs into a holistic and inspiring environment.

Designing for the Modern Senior Lifestyle
The center redefines senior living by moving beyond conventional healthcare and lifestyle facilities. It recognizes the deeper aspirations of older adults, emphasizing freedom, openness, vitality, and social engagement. The architectural concept was crafted to foster mental well-being, physical activity, and community interaction, enabling seniors to envision daily life with independence and joy.

Contextual Integration with Nature
Nestled between a wetland park and a National Forest Park, the building harmonizes seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The design breaks away from traditional rigid structures, adopting a dynamic and fluid form inspired by nature. The building’s curved roof, resembling a rippling water droplet ascending into fluffy white clouds, flows gently into the landscape, symbolizing openness and tranquility. A westward-facing bridge connects the rooftop to the adjacent Wetland Park, creating a continuous dialogue between architecture and nature.

Functional Layout and Accessibility
The Activity Center houses multiple facilities designed for diverse senior needs, including a recreational hall, canteen, library, and an elderly university. These functional spaces are arranged around a central atrium garden, fostering natural light, openness, and social interaction. Indoor corridors and barrier-free pathways ensure seamless circulation, while vertical transportation via elevators guarantees full accessibility, making every area navigable with ease.

The Four Seasons Flower Hall
At the heart of the atrium, the Four Seasons Flower Hall features a skylight that bathes the garden in natural sunlight, allowing seniors to experience seasonal changes year-round. This design immerses residents in a green, tranquil environment, supporting both physical comfort and emotional well-being. The hall encourages engagement with nature, offering spaces for reflection, reading, or gentle socialization.

Rooftop Sports Garden and Community Interaction
The rooftop transforms into a sports and activity garden, easily accessible through multiple indoor and outdoor elevators. The garden functions as a semi-outdoor retreat, integrating exercise, relaxation, and social interaction for senior residents. A rooftop walkway extends westward, bridging the artificial environment of the center with the natural Wetland Park, promoting both wellness and connectivity with nature.

Innovative Materials and Architectural Expression
The center’s design features a lightweight PTFE curved membrane roof, resembling a cloud floating above the building. Its two-story glass curtain wall at the entrance introduces natural light and scenic views into the interior while connecting residents with the surrounding landscape. Complemented by a vertically divided metal curtain wall, the façade enhances the building’s visual appeal and spatial quality.
The architectural layout spans two to three floors above ground and two floors below, providing a versatile spatial experience that caters to both activity and contemplation. Every design element emphasizes a strong connection between seniors and nature, creating functional, inspiring spaces for community engagement, spiritual nourishment, and physical activity.

A New Standard for Senior Living Communities
The Activity Center of Taikang Community Yan Garden is more than a building: it is a holistic ecosystem for senior residents, harmonizing healthcare, recreation, education, and nature. Completed in the autumn of 2023, it sets a benchmark for future-oriented senior living architecture, demonstrating how design can empower aging populations while integrating ecological sensitivity and urban wellness principles.
