A Contemporary Urban Renewal Project

Located on Ziwei Road in Chongqing, Anaago Bistro by Vari Architectural Design is more than a restaurant—it is an experimental site for urban reconstruction and a community gathering space. Drawing inspiration from the unique cultural and architectural heritage of A-na-guo, a village in Yunnan often called “the last pure land of Lijiang,” the project reinterprets natural traditions within a modern city block.

Inspiration: A-na-guo and the Rhythm of the Village

The name Anaago originates from the Naxi language, meaning “beautiful and rich highland.” With its roots in Yunnan’s primitive environment and ethnic diversity, the village represents cultural richness and natural beauty. Its use of bamboo, logs, and stone in architecture inspired the bistro’s material palette, creating a dialogue between heritage and modernity.

Inside Anaago Bistro, the architects crafted an environment that reflects the rhythm of the village, combining organic forms with contemporary design. Four “tribal boxes” were inserted into the narrow space, symbolizing miniature village dwellings. The result is a community-inspired microcosm—a place where architecture, nature, and people converge.

Materiality: A Natural Symphony

The material selection plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere:

  • Bamboo weaving softens spaces, creates semi-privacy, and evokes craftsmanship.
  • Logs and wood provide warmth, familiarity, and connection to history.
  • Red cave stone and volcanic rock introduce texture and geological richness.
  • Cast iron and handmade furniture enhance authenticity and cultural grounding.

Together, these materials create a space that is at once rustic, refined, and immersive, echoing the symphony of emotions, humanity, and nature found in Yunnan villages.

Spatial Experience: From City to Village

The spatial journey is carefully orchestrated:

  • At the entrance, bamboo screens and urban windows bridge the city with the “village” interior.
  • Private bamboo-woven rooms offer intimacy with warm lighting and soft shadows, evoking a dreamlike, rustic ambiance.
  • Windows frame cinematic urban views, blending Chongqing’s neon skyline with the natural tones of the interior.
  • Wooden screens and log-infused walls create rhythm and flow, allowing light and air to weave through spaces seamlessly.
  • A secluded private dining room merges logs, structural elements, and handcrafted details into a harmonious sanctuary.

Atmosphere: Nature, Light, and Mystery

The design celebrates Yunnan’s natural treasures while embracing modern lighting strategies. Soft, subdued lighting interacts with bamboo and stone textures, casting mysterious shadows and enhancing the bistro’s warm, immersive character. Each material is accentuated under light, creating depth and a sense of discovery.
