Bahía de Banderas House by o.d.e. — A Coastal Sanctuary of Geometry, Silence, and Sea
A serene coastal home in Bahía de Banderas, Mexico, blending geometry, light, and sea views through timeless, sustainable architecture.
Located in the serene landscape of Bahía de Banderas, Mexico, the Bahía de Banderas House by o.d.e. (Oficina Documental de Espacio) redefines coastal living through architecture rooted in contemplation, proportion, and timeless beauty. Designed in collaboration with BT DEV and constructed by TUCA, this 2,350 m² residence for a retired foreign couple is a poetic dialogue between sea, structure, and stillness.

A Home Where the Sea Leads the Narrative
The journey through the house begins with a powerful gesture—grasping the grand doors with both hands and opening them inward to reveal the vast Pacific horizon. This symbolic act was the homeowners’ single request: for the sea to become the central protagonist of daily life. From the very first step, the architecture invites the landscape inside, transforming the act of arrival into a ritual of revelation.

Philosophical and Visual Inspiration
The design draws inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico’s “Piazza d’Italia with Fountain” (1969), infusing the home with a metaphysical calm. The structure is symmetrical, balanced, and serene—an embodiment of geometry, silence, and proportion. A central portico axis defines the composition, connecting the social and private zones while guiding the eye toward the bay’s glimmering expanse.

Spatial Composition and Functionality
The layout establishes a rhythmic flow of movement and light. The social core—living, dining, and kitchen areas—completely opens to the sea, allowing the ocean breeze and natural light to shape the interior atmosphere. Meanwhile, bedrooms are tucked toward the north, facing intimate patios that ensure privacy without compromising ventilation or comfort.

Embracing Tradition Through Contemporary Design
The community’s requirement for sloped roofs became an opportunity to reinterpret traditional Mexican architecture through a minimalist lens. The house’s gabled wooden roofs, paired with porticos and open corridors, blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, inviting fluid transitions between garden, patio, and sea. The structure’s rhythm of slender timber columns creates a light, graceful silhouette that merges harmoniously with the tropical surroundings.

Materiality and Warmth
Under the direction of Adriana Olmedo, in collaboration with the homeowners, the interiors were crafted using a restrained, natural palette. Locally sourced cantera stone, wood, and marble come together to form an atmosphere of warmth and permanence, while ensuring thermal comfort in the coastal climate. Bespoke furniture pieces were designed to enhance spatial unity and reflect the home’s quiet sophistication.

Sustainability and Landscape Integration
Working with Estufa Forestal, the landscape design celebrates the native coastal ecosystem. Every plant species was carefully chosen for resilience and minimal maintenance, creating a sustainable garden that grows in tune with the sea’s rhythm. This environmental sensitivity extends the home’s dialogue between architecture and nature—where the built and natural worlds coexist seamlessly.

A House of Contemplation and Presence
Architects Andrés Guzmán, Alejandro Gutiérrez, and Rafael Barbato describe the project as “a place where the sea is not just seen, but lived.” Indeed, every axis, column, and surface of the Bahía de Banderas House exists to honor the sea’s omnipresence. It is a sanctuary of reflection, a timeless coastal dwelling where architecture fades into silence, and the horizon becomes part of the home’s soul.
