A Sustainable Beauty Salon Inspired by Water and Forests
Located in Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture, this innovative beauty salon by Studio Velocity seamlessly integrates architecture with nature. The region is surrounded by the Nagara River and the Kiso River, creating a lush environment filled with greenery and fresh water. The salon is designed to enhance this natural setting, offering a tranquil space that fosters relaxation and wellness.


Integrating Natural Elements: Water and Greenery
One of the standout features of the Kakamigahara Beauty Salon is its connection to the local water cycle. The region benefits from abundant groundwater, with Kakamigahara City's entire water supply sourced from underground wells. Recognizing this, the architects incorporated a water basin into the design, where naturally sourced groundwater is drawn from a 20-meter-deep aquifer. This not only creates a serene landscape but also irrigates the "small forest" surrounding the salon.
The forest-like environment acts as a natural privacy screen, softening the glass-covered facade while allowing sunlight to filter through. The integration of water and greenery enhances the calming atmosphere, making the salon an oasis of relaxation.


A Multi-Functional Space: The Open-Air Rooftop Terrace
The first floor houses the essential functions of a beauty salon, including reception, styling, and treatment areas. However, the second floor transforms into a semi-external terrace, providing an open-air retreat for customers and staff. Designed without enclosing walls, this space invites natural light, fresh air, and scenic views of the surrounding greenery.
The attic-like space under the single-slope roof has been repurposed into a public terrace, offering a welcoming environment where clients can unwind while waiting for their services. The structure’s wood braces replace traditional load-bearing walls, allowing for a lighter, more open aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity.
