In the heart of Brussels, Belgium, the BKMN House Transformation by Bauclub exemplifies how thoughtful renovation can breathe new life into an existing urban dwelling. Completed in 2022, this project centers around enhancing natural light, strengthening the bond between indoor and outdoor spaces, and updating the residence to meet modern living standards—all while preserving the essence of the original townhouse.

A Renovation Rooted in Context and Light

The client’s primary vision was clear: improve the relationship between the home and its garden, and allow daylight to flood the interiors. Bauclub embraced the pivot position of the townhouse—an architectural opportunity that guided the design response. Instead of drastically altering the structure, the architects opted for a subtle and strategic intervention, covering a central void with a roof to unify the fragmented areas.

This new volume does more than provide shelter; it creates a spatial clarity that highlights the transition between interior and exterior. The design enhances spatial legibility and reinforces a visual and functional connection to the garden.

Seamless Integration of Old and New

The renovation sought to respect and retain the character of the original building. Rather than replacing existing features, Bauclub chose to reuse, reinterpret, and expose the home’s authentic materials and structural elements. This approach not only reduced the project’s environmental footprint but also allowed the home’s history to remain visible and celebrated.

The kitchen, for instance, was redesigned to capture garden views while offering a clean, contemporary palette. The windows were tactfully reimagined to enhance daylight without compromising the historical integrity of the facade. Throughout the house, original staircases, handrails, and flooring have been preserved and highlighted, creating a tactile dialogue between past and present.

Architecture as a Didactic Experience

One of the most compelling aspects of the BKMN House is its didactic spatial arrangement. Each room has been clearly defined yet remains interconnected through carefully planned sightlines and transitions. There is a narrative embedded within the architecture—spaces reveal themselves gradually, inviting exploration while maintaining a cohesive flow.

The intervention allows for functional upgrades such as improved insulation and energy efficiency, meeting the standards of contemporary living without compromising architectural character.
