Main Concept: Connecting Through Architecture

The HOOD project tackles the challenges of cultural and visual disparity between the Wiggins and Bonela neighborhoods. Positioned strategically, the site acts as a unifying link, creating spaces where cultural differences dissolve, and people come together. This center provides voluntary services and venues for events, helping to elevate the quality of life for residents.

Blurring Boundaries: The Architectural Approach

The design employs two key axes that converge at a central point, symbolizing the unity of the two communities. The central hub serves as a space for celebrations, cultural events, and community engagement. This thoughtful layout creates a seamless flow between the neighborhoods, making it a physical and symbolic bridge.

Features of the HOOD Project

The project incorporates a variety of spaces designed for flexibility and adaptability. These include:

  • Enclosed and Semi-Open Classrooms: For workshops, creative activities, and educational programs.
  • Counseling Rooms: Providing private spaces for guidance and support.
  • Event Halls: Hosting cultural gatherings, celebrations, and workshops.
  • Temporary Accommodation: Rooms for volunteers and residents.
  • Marketplace Stalls: Promoting local entrepreneurship and showcasing community products.

Adapting to Topography

The design integrates seamlessly with the natural contours of the site. Key features include:

  • Southern Masses: Aligned with street level for easy accessibility.
  • Central Social Hub: Located at the site’s lowest point, serving as the community's heart.
  • Northwest Entrance Axis: Designed to enhance connectivity and accessibility from elevated topographies.

Climate-Responsive Architecture

Considering the site’s coastal location and high humidity, the HOOD project adopts climate-sensitive strategies:

  • Ventilation: The ribbon-like forms and open spaces facilitate natural airflow, ensuring comfort and reducing energy reliance.
  • Sustainable Materials: Concrete was used for its moisture resistance, while locally sourced wooden reeds provide shading and support sustainability.

Community Impact

The HOOD project is not just an architectural achievement but also a social initiative. By providing spaces for collaboration, counseling, and education, it fosters community growth and inclusivity. The project is designed to serve as a model for urban neighborhoods facing similar cultural and social divides.
