Nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Brickwood Villa renovation by Futurground reimagines a 35-year-old single-story semi-detached house into a contemporary, light-filled residence. Led by architect Choong Wei Li, this 3,000 ft² project addresses critical structural challenges while creating a harmonious balance between modern living, natural light, and lush greenery.

Reimagining a Home with Structural Challenges

Originally, the house faced significant issues, including roof leaks, mold, and uneven floor levels due to its construction across three sloping front levels. These structural limitations contributed to low ceilings, cramped spaces, and poor ventilation. The renovation strategy focused on a complete spatial reconfiguration, improving circulation, privacy, and hierarchy throughout the home.

Key structural interventions included raising the ceiling height from 2.8 meters to 5.5 meters, made possible by new perimeter roof beams supported with six additional reinforced concrete columns. This upgrade not only amplified a sense of openness but also maximized natural light and airflow throughout the interior.
