Bustle
“Every event and activity could make this space alive.”
The site is on the Campo Tirandentes soccer field which is located in Sao Paulo, Brazil in the neighborhood of Vila Dionisia. This area is enriched by active nightlife, lively art murals, street food, and so on.
Bustle is the name of the structural building that is designed as a 3 level clubhouse with indoor and outdoor multi-purpose spaces also act as a viewing center and is also harmonized with the local context. Its intention is just like the meaning of bustle, verb: move in an energetic and busy manner; noun: excited activity and movement.
The spatial typology method was used based on the architectural study. By making use of the spaces by making it to a multi-functional space where events or small activities could take place or it could also act as a community center of the public gathering. Another was based on the site, where the contour takes place therefore a ramp and staircase were created to act as a pathway to the entrances of the structure. Lastly urban. Its site context and surroundings. The site has loose fencing around it and its fencings were some thin walls that were been drawn which turns into mural arts therefore the structural wall panel with mural arts has been created to the structure of the building to harmonize with the site context.
There were many iterations being tried out to arrive at the “Bustle” outcome. Many thinkings such as making the massing form to a box where it explains the modular concept to slowly changing its form based on the studies of the organization of the 3 elements: Architectural, Site, and Urban. From the understanding of the site context and its surroundings. Moving on to questioning how to improve the better viewing infrastructure such as:
Our method of design investigation is partly by understanding its site context and its surroundings and what was lacking and after that we question ourselves. What if we were there? and what could we possibly feel when we see the existing and how can we improve it? One of an example of questioning ourselves:
“Seating and standing at the same level ground would make the absence of the viewpoints of the audiences so therefore the solution is to create a bleachers-like seating which could make the audiences view better.”
To continue after that was “Why not create a choice for the audiences, a bleachers-like seating with shades to get away from the sun or rain and another is to view at the highest point with an open space.”
Shading is an important factor of the architecture where we implemented street mural art into the design where it provides shading also visual pleasing views from within.
That is how we do our design investigation which leads to this final outcome design. As for how the program condensed into this final outcome is how we created the multi-functional spaces based on the side study on the site activities.
As for materiality, we go for accessibility, locally sources, constructed in bolt whereas it can be easily installed and removed if wanted. And lastly, cost-efficiency. Therefore concrete, steel, and wood have been used in this structure. A wooden panel has been used to act as a wall for mural arts inside and there is a 10mm hole in between each panel that way there is ventilation. And for its safety, many railings have been built on every floor.
A specific objective has been met when we have these key points: Multi-functional spaces, Indoor and Outdoor, Bleachers, Access, Easily constructed, Safety.
Bustle is designed to have a modular structure whereas it can be easily installed and removed. Therefore, if there is a possibility of expansion, its structure can be built into many on repeat and stacking to the top or sides and it can be created into a larger spacing for other events and activities.
This project transformation would likely be a community center where big events may take place in the future as it is surrounded by educational institutes. Such as long events that are held from day to night or even continuous days.
