Architectural Approach: Preserving Heritage, Introducing Modernity

Over the years, the southern elevation of the building underwent multiple alterations without architectural consistency. The rehabilitation project by Filipe Pina redefines this façade, transforming it into the new main elevation of the home.

Two key historical elements—slate thresholds and shale masonry structures—became the foundation of the design. These were carefully highlighted and integrated into the overall architectural language, ensuring the building’s cultural and material continuity.

Meanwhile, the northern and eastern façades retained their historical value, where granite sawmills and stone masonry were meticulously restored. The project also introduced new openings to the south, creating stronger connections between indoor living spaces and the surrounding natural landscape.

Sustainable Materials and Traditional Techniques

The Caldeira House emphasizes sustainability and the use of natural, locally sourced materials. Construction methods were inspired by traditional Portuguese techniques, including:

  • Lime plaster façades for breathability and durability
  • Wooden frames and flooring to enhance warmth and authenticity
  • Cork insulation for sustainable thermal performance
  • Slate thresholds as a nod to historical craftsmanship

This careful material selection ensures the home is environmentally responsible, low-maintenance, and resilient, while retaining its traditional charm.

Interior Layout: Harmony of Old and New

The interior organization of the house reflects both functionality and heritage.

  • Ground Floor (Level 0): Accessible through the new southern elevation, this level houses the social areas, including the living, dining, and kitchen spaces. These areas are designed as an open-plan environment, divided only by the existing shale masonry walls, which preserve the memory of the original structure.
  • First Floor (Level 1): Dedicated to private spaces, this level features three bedrooms, arranged through a thoughtful play of symmetry and rotation. The highlight of this floor is a large panoramic space that frames the breathtaking natural landscapes of the Vila Nova de Foz Côa region.

This organization allows for both intimacy and openness, offering a perfect balance between communal family life and private retreats.

A Contemporary Home Rooted in History

The Caldeira House by Filipe Pina is more than a refurbished residence—it’s a dialogue between past and present. By restoring the heritage-rich materials and enhancing them with modern interventions, the project redefines how traditional Portuguese architecture can serve the needs of modern living.

This rehabilitation highlights the importance of sustainability, local craftsmanship, and cultural respect in contemporary design, while providing a comfortable and functional living environment for its inhabitants.
