Camplus San Pietro offers 178 sustainable student rooms in Rome, combining minimalist interiors, flexible common areas, and green living façades.
Located in the vibrant heart of Rome, adjacent to Vatican City, Camplus San Pietro Student Residence by Roselli Architetti Associati transforms a former nursing home into a modern, sustainable student housing complex. Completed in 2021, the project encompasses a 4,000 m² five-story building thoughtfully retrofitted for seismic safety, energy efficiency, and functional optimization. With a focus on minimalism, flexibility, and environmental responsibility, this residence caters to the evolving needs of contemporary student life.



The architectural strategy emphasizes exposed or partially concealed MEP installations, rough yet refined structural materials, and pared-down technical details such as wall-mounted heating panels. These design choices create a raw, minimalistic aesthetic, highlighting material honesty while maintaining an elegant and functional environment. The interiors integrate industrial elements with contemporary minimalism, providing students with spaces that are visually uncluttered yet highly adaptable.


Flexible Common Areas for Dynamic Student Life
The ground and first floors host a variety of shared facilities, including a welcoming lobby, study cubicles for tutoring, a cafeteria, a communal kitchen, a locker room, and a laundry area. Every common area is designed as a multipurpose space to adapt seamlessly to diverse student activities. Notably, the original stairwell was demolished and reconstructed, incorporating informal social spaces along circulation routes. This approach fosters interaction while preserving the primary function of connecting all levels of the residence.

Comfortable and Functional Student Rooms
Camplus San Pietro accommodates 178 students, offering single and double bedrooms designed for comfort and practicality. High ceilings allow for elevated bed structures that differentiate sleeping areas from living spaces, creating a loft-like ambiance. The elegant metal bed frames serve multiple purposes, offering storage solutions while maintaining a clean, open-plan aesthetic. Each room is intentionally designed to maximize natural light and provide a sense of privacy without compromising communal engagement.


Sustainable Façades and Green Infrastructure
The exterior showcases a living façade constructed from fast-growing, low-maintenance ivy intertwined with a metal mesh anchored to the building. This green façade absorbs up to 811 kg of CO2 per square meter annually, enhancing urban biodiversity while contributing to air purification. The west-facing garden, accessible directly from the lower floor, creates a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces, promoting outdoor student activities and social interaction.


Climate-Responsive Landscaping
Sustainability extends to the landscape and parking areas, which employ urban drainage principles, including rain gardens and permeable pavers for pathways and driveways. By reducing impermeable surfaces from 44% to 15% and planting 102 new trees, the project mitigates climate change effects, absorbs 22,088 kg of CO2 annually, and filters harmful pollutants. These nature-based solutions minimize the residence’s carbon footprint while creating a healthier urban environment.


Lighting and Material Excellence
The residence incorporates carefully curated lighting and materials from renowned manufacturers such as iGuzzini, ATHEA Pavimenti, Contract Arredo Design, and Davide Groppi. The lighting design enhances the minimalist interiors, emphasizing spatial clarity and highlighting the structural elegance of raw finishes. The combination of sustainable materials, exposed installations, and precise detailing reflects a forward-thinking design philosophy that balances aesthetics, functionality, and environmental consciousness.

Camplus San Pietro exemplifies how historic buildings can be adapted to meet contemporary needs with sustainability and design excellence. Through minimalistic interiors, flexible communal areas, high-quality student accommodations, and environmentally responsible landscaping, the project sets a benchmark for modern student residences in urban contexts. Its strategic integration of green façades, climate-responsive landscapes, and thoughtful interiors fosters community, well-being, and environmental stewardship for its residents.
