Casa Cumbre by Viento Norte – Modern Rural Living in Puerto Varas, Chile
Casa Cumbre by Viento Norte blends modern design with rural Chilean landscapes, featuring sustainable wood, expansive views, natural light, and flexible living spaces.
Reimagining Rural Living with Modern Design
Casa Cumbre is a contemporary residential project that beautifully merges the charm of rural landscapes with modern architectural sophistication. Located in the serene town of Las Quemas near Puerto Varas, Chile, the house is designed to offer flexible spaces that adapt to various lifestyle needs, while embracing the natural surroundings.

Site and Landscape Integration
Situated on a traditional grazing meadow, the project began with a blank canvas, allowing the design to fully engage with the environment. Positioned toward the rear of the plot, the house captures stunning distant views of the Andes mountain range and intimate glimpses of the surrounding trees, gardens, and future orchard.

Natural Light and Spatial Connectivity
Casa Cumbre maximizes solar exposure through a transparent axis that runs east to west, capturing the warm light of both sunrise and sunset. The main living areas—including the living room, dining room, and kitchen—feature double-height ceilings, promoting spatial integration and a sense of openness. A small room protruding over this central area enhances the vertical dimension, creating a dynamic interplay between interior volumes.

Winter Garden and Indoor-Outdoor Harmony
An east-facing winter garden acts as a transitional space between indoors and outdoors, offering shelter from rain while allowing sunlight to naturally warm the interior. This multifunctional area accommodates plants and domestic animals, fostering a harmonious connection with nature.

Functional Layout
The house is organized over two levels:
- Main living spaces, guest bedroom, and bathroom
- Small room, master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet
The overall form of the house, including the ridge height, is shaped by this programmatic layout, creating a balanced and visually appealing silhouette.

Sustainable Materials and Structure
Casa Cumbre features a mixed structural system of steel and traditional wooden framing. The black zinc exterior, paired with warm wooden details, creates a welcoming atmosphere while integrating seamlessly with the landscape. Inside, exposed steel and wood elements highlight the craftsmanship, complemented by native wood floors and white-painted wooden walls that enhance natural brightness.
The use of wood throughout the project is both sustainable and environmentally responsible. Renewable and biodegradable, it reduces the carbon footprint of construction and promotes harmony with the natural environment surrounding the home.

Experience Casa Cumbre
Casa Cumbre is a modern interpretation of rural living, combining comfort, elegance, and sustainability. Its thoughtful design encourages interaction with nature, generous daylighting, and a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces.
