Casolare Biordo Vecchio by Studio Bressan – A Harmonious Rural Renovation in Asolo, Italy
Casolare Biordo Vecchio is a renovated Asolo farmhouse blending historic stone architecture with modern glass additions, warm interiors, and landscape integration.
Preserving Tradition, Embracing Modernity
Nestled in the rolling hills of Asolo, Casolare Biordo Vecchio is a sensitive restoration and renovation project of a historic rural farmhouse. Designed by Studio Bressan, this project transforms an old structure into a contemporary residence while maintaining its authentic Italian rural character. The farmhouse is discreetly situated along Via Biordo Vecchio, forming part of a small cluster of homes facing the public road.

Passing through the entrance gate, the original stone facade dominates the view, reflecting the building’s historic essence while safeguarding the privacy of the interiors. Only a few small openings pierce the thick masonry walls, allowing controlled natural light and preserving a sense of domestic intimacy. Surrounding vegetation frames the farmhouse naturally, enhancing its quiet, secluded ambiance and establishing a serene dialogue with the landscape.

Architectural Intervention: Connecting Home and Landscape
The renovation carefully preserves the traditional proportions and construction features, while introducing a modern expansion: a double-height glass volume extending from the southern portico. This contemporary addition redefines the relationship between the home and its surroundings. The portico acts as a fan-shaped frame, opening up views of the greenery and seamlessly connecting the interior living spaces with the lush Asolo hills. This design strategy shifts the house from an introverted structure to an outward-facing, landscape-integrated home.

Warm, Textured Interiors
Inside, the home exudes warmth and character. The interiors combine natural, textured materials such as oak wood, travertine floors, light plaster finishes, and exposed timber beams. These materials not only celebrate Italian craftsmanship but also create a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Large openings allow natural light to permeate the space, creating soft, inviting atmospheres for everyday life. The portico extends this experience, serving as a living frame that brings the calmness of the hills indoors.
The spatial layout emphasizes functional and visual continuity. The living area flows as a single, open space connected to the outdoors, while upstairs bedrooms retain a private, intimate character. On the exterior, the combination of exposed stone, pitched roof, and muted natural tones ensures the farmhouse integrates organically with the surrounding landscape.

A Contemporary Rural Retreat
Casolare Biordo Vecchio stands as a thoughtful example of heritage-sensitive residential renovation. It restores dignity to an existing farmhouse, balances tradition with contemporary interventions, and creates a welcoming, orderly home that responds to both the landscape and the daily life of its inhabitants. The project embodies a timeless dialogue between historic architecture, modern design, and natural surroundings.
