Located in the heart of Hong Kong, the "Central Eco Market" by Xavier Lee is a shortlisted entry of the Seed Bank competition that redefines what sustainable architecture means in an urban context. More than just a market or a building, the project is a living, breathing ecosystem—a bold architectural experiment that merges environmental consciousness with urban resilience and social interaction.

Inspired by the natural seed-to-tree life cycle, the design metaphorically and physically weaves ecological principles into its structure. Life begins with a seed, grows into a tree, and is dispersed by birds—this eternal loop of growth and regeneration forms the conceptual spine of the Central Eco Market. Xavier Lee’s vision is not only to preserve this natural continuity but to integrate it into the architecture, making the building a seed bank that spreads rather than stores.

Architecture that Grows, Breathes, and Teaches

The building transitions from a symbolic 'cage' into an 'open ring'—mirroring how enclosed, congested urban blocks can transform into breathable, open, and nurturing urban spaces. Layered across multiple levels, the program features a Seed Shop, Green Market, Food Market, Terraces, Covered Garden, Interaction Zone, Exhibition Space, Roof Farm, and a Glass Pavilion. Each zone is designed not just for function but to activate community engagement and ecological awareness.

The rooftop farm and terraces, dubbed "Urban Lungs," contribute to local food security while improving air quality. Through strategic daylighting, ventilation, and open circulation corridors, the project emphasizes passive sustainability. The Central Eco Market becomes not only an urban intervention but also a didactic environment that educates visitors about sustainable living, urban farming, and circular resource systems.

Urban Farming as Cultural Continuity

A poignant part of the narrative is the role of pigeons in the ecosystem. Symbolizing peace, they carry seeds from place to place, continuing the natural cycle. This poetic layer is embedded into the architecture, where seed propagation is both literal and symbolic—spreading knowledge, biodiversity, and community values.

Hong Kong’s dense high-rises and urban conflicts, represented in the design visuals, frame this market as a peaceful antidote—where nature and humanity coexist. The building stands as a counter-narrative to gentrification and alienation, offering a regenerative public space that is inclusive, educational, and ecological.

The Central Eco Market is a beacon of sustainable architecture that celebrates intergenerational exchange, ecological resilience, and urban agriculture. By transforming a traditional market into a dynamic eco-interaction hub, Xavier Lee proposes an architecture that does not just serve—but evolves, grows, and gives back.
