Chicago Park District Headquarters and Fieldhouse by John Ronan Architects
Chicago’s Park District Headquarters by John Ronan Architects integrates offices and a fieldhouse into a reclaimed park, emphasizing sustainability, community, and adaptive design.
Located in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood, the Chicago Park District Headquarters and Fieldhouse by John Ronan Architects is a landmark civic building that seamlessly blends administrative functions with community recreation. Completed in 2023, the 80,000-square-foot headquarters houses office space for 205 staff members, while the 18,000-square-foot fieldhouse includes a gymnasium, fitness rooms, and club facilities. The project occupies a newly reclaimed 17-acre park on a former brownfield site, showcasing innovative urban renewal and sustainable design strategies.

Civic Integration and Park Masterplanning
The headquarters and fieldhouse are thoughtfully integrated into the park, creating a dignified civic presence while promoting public interaction. The circular, two-story headquarters building is strategically positioned along a park pathway inspired by Frederick Law Olmsted’s historic Chicago boulevard system, connecting open green spaces across the site. Where the pathway intersects the building, it expands into two open-air courtyards that flood interiors with natural light and ventilation, offering outdoor meeting, relaxation, and recreation spaces for both staff and neighborhood residents.
The design fosters a strong connection between the Chicago Park District (CPD) staff and the community, encouraging engagement in the park’s activities while creating a workplace that feels immersed in nature.

Flexible and Collaborative Office Spaces
The headquarters office layout prioritizes collaboration and adaptability. Alternating bands of enclosed offices and open-plan areas ensure both privacy and teamwork, while second-floor offices overlook the fieldhouse gym below. Key amenities, such as the staff break room, are centrally located adjacent to a courtyard and the gym, allowing staff to enjoy lunch while watching activities in the fieldhouse. A covered outdoor terrace on the second floor provides direct access from the fieldhouse and park, serving as a flexible space for meetings, events, or casual relaxation.
Direct connections between the headquarters and fieldhouse, including a stair and elevator link, eliminate the need for staff to go outside, ensuring seamless internal circulation.

Sustainable Materials and Innovative Design
John Ronan Architects rooted the project in Chicago’s architectural heritage by using reclaimed Chicago common brick salvaged from local demolished buildings. Bronze-tinted unitized glazing enhances daylighting while champagne-anodized aluminum screens provide solar shading, energy efficiency, and visual distinction. The structural system combines metal bar joists with masonry bearing walls, offering both cost-effectiveness and durability.
Internally, reclaimed ash wood: sourced from local trees affected by the emerald ash borer: is used for furniture, wall cladding, and gym flooring, further emphasizing sustainability. The building also incorporates a green roof, mitigating the urban heat island effect while contributing to the ecological resilience of the site.

A Civic Landmark for Community Engagement
By integrating office, recreational, and community spaces, the Chicago Park District Headquarters and Fieldhouse exemplifies modern civic architecture that balances functional efficiency with public engagement. The building celebrates Chicago’s heritage, promotes sustainable urban development, and provides a welcoming environment for staff and visitors alike, reinforcing the park’s role as a vibrant community hub.
