Co-School for A New Hope
The main objective behind the project that we created was to create the form of educational facilities that could accommodate various activities with effective and efficient use of space, especially since this project is intended to accommodate community activities in conflict areas. This educational facility is later expected to become a "new hope" for all communities around the project location. From this background, we try to propose the concept of a "transformable hall" which can be modified according to needs. With the shape of the space in the form of a hall, various functions with various levels of complexity can be accommodated in a room that can be modified.
CONTEXT
This project takes place at the Batman Turkey suburb, which is still in the process of being developed. The project location is surrounded by streets, elongated from the east to the west, with the main highway on the west side. Communities around the site are more dominant walking and cycling than using motorized vehicles. To respond this condition, we try to use fenceless and permeable concept, so that it can be accessed by pedestrians from all directions. The position that extends from east to west gives an advantage to the design because it can create a dominant opening direction to the south side to get sunlight in winter. The condition of the site is generally flat, but there is an increase in level on the east side, which we use to create an open amphitheater area that can be used for various activities.
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL PROGRAMS
In general, this project aims to accommodate the main activities as a means of education as well as a space for improving the quality of life of the community. Activities that can be accommodated by this design are classrooms, studios, learning centers, libraries, offices, cafes, sports, and various informal community activities, thus making this school not only for conventional school, but more oriented as a learning and social hub. However, due to site limitations, we submitted a proposal to make a hall space that can be modified according to needs. The function of the room that cannot be modified is only the function of the toilet. While other functions can be changed as needed. In this design, we propose several possible activity scenarios. But basically the activities that can be done at this school are not only limited to what we propose in the illustrations, but can adapt to the demands, needs, and creativity of the people there.
INTERACTION
The design is inside out through the wide glass door openings facing north and south, creating interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces. This creates an attractive atmosphere for people who are doing activity in the building. The interactions created by this design are not only interactions between users, but also interactions between buildings and the surrounding environmental context. With the fenceless concept, interaction can occur between people in the school environment and the community around the school, so as to create a sense of community. The interior can be easily modified by minimizing the presence of fixed furniture that is able to encourage collaborative learning by arranging the room according to the learning method that one wants to apply.
ECONOMICAL
The design tries to create a multifunctional hall that can be easily modified for various purposes. Therefore, from the economic aspect, construction costs will be minimal because we only need one building function that can be converted into various types of function as needed. The design also applies construction materials that are local and easily available around the site. Construction methods can be carried out using conventional methods by involving the community directly in the construction process, so that in addition to minimizing construction costs, a sense of community has been formed even before the building is built. To facilitate the construction process, the design is made with modules that are easy to modify and easy to replicate if you want to build it in a different location. The heating & cooling system applied to the number of each space modules. This strategy is applied to create energy efficiency that is used appropriately with the amount of space required.
CONCLUSION
Our community school design aims to create a learning environment that can also be used for community activity. With the limitation of area availability, we propose to create a flexible space that can be modified according to the needs of the community, so we can provide access to facilities for education, training, and community engagement that will enhance the life of locals, fostering cohesion and harmony.
