Comporta 107 House by dEMM Arquitectura: A Harmonious Fusion of Architecture and Nature
Comporta 107 House blends modern architecture with nature, featuring floating concrete, biophilic design, and seamless indoor-outdoor integration in Portugal.
A Beach House Inspired by Comporta’s Natural Beauty
Located amidst the serene pine forests and vast rice fields of Comporta, Portugal, Comporta 107 House by dEMM Arquitectura is a stunning architectural masterpiece that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings. Positioned on sand dunes, this beach house draws inspiration from the region’s untouched, wild beaches and the raw beauty of the local fauna and flora.

Architectural Concept: Transparency and Integration with Nature
Designed by Paulo Fernandes Silva and Diana Fernandes Silva, the 400-square-meter residence is characterized by two distinct yet harmoniously integrated volumes. The ground floor features a warm, wooden structure, while the upper level is a monolithic concrete volume that appears to float above. The contrast between these materials enhances the home’s contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a deep connection with nature.
One of the defining elements of the project is its commitment to transparency. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass panels eliminate barriers between the indoors and outdoors, creating an immersive experience where residents feel enveloped by the landscape. The strategic use of patios on the ground floor allows native dune vegetation to extend into the social spaces, reinforcing the organic connection between architecture and environment.

Structural Innovation: Floating Concrete Volume
A key architectural innovation of Comporta 107 House is the engineering behind the upper-level concrete structure. Supported only at two extremities, this volume appears to float, eliminating central supports and creating an open-plan living and kitchen area free from vertical obstructions. The result is an unobstructed space that seamlessly extends to the outdoor pool area and interior courtyards, blurring the distinction between inside and outside.

Biophilic Design and Sustainable Landscaping
Integrating biophilic design principles, the project prioritizes nature as a central design element. The extensive use of local vegetation throughout the residence—including terraces, balconies, and gardens—creates a seamless transition between architecture and landscape. The selection of native plant species ensures sustainability, while also enhancing the sensory experience of the space.
The home’s outdoor areas, including terraces and gardens, are designed as extensions of the interior. Thoughtfully placed greenery merges with the architectural forms, providing shaded retreats and reinforcing a tranquil, immersive environment.

Maximizing Natural Light and Spatial Experience
The residence boasts oversized interior heights and full-height windows, allowing an abundance of natural light to penetrate every room. This design choice enhances the sense of openness and creates an uninterrupted visual dialogue with the surrounding landscape. Whether from the bedrooms, social spaces, or common areas, the ever-changing hues of the sky and foliage become an integral part of the home’s ambiance.

Material Palette: A Balance of Weight and Lightness
A carefully curated material palette further enhances the project’s connection with nature. The use of exposed concrete provides a sense of stability and modernity, while textured wood, designed specifically for this project, adds warmth and tactile richness. Corten steel accents and sand-colored natural stone featuring embedded fossils pay homage to the beach setting, reinforcing the home’s organic aesthetic.

A Sanctuary Merging Architecture and Landscape
Comporta 107 House by dEMM Arquitectura is a testament to contemporary architecture’s ability to harmonize with nature. Through its minimalist design, floating concrete structure, biophilic elements, and seamless indoor-outdoor integration, the house offers a tranquil retreat that embodies the spirit of Comporta’s breathtaking landscape. This residence is not just a home—it is an experience that celebrates the beauty of natural surroundings while embracing modern living.
