Courtyard House Design – Rosa María House by delavegacanolasso
Rosa María House is a serene courtyard house design that harmonizes nature, light, and crafted materials for timeless living in Madrid.
Rosa María House
Located in Madrid, Spain, the Rosa María House by delavegacanolasso is a poetic example of courtyard house design. Organized around two central patios, the residence is a dialogue between architecture and nature, where light, shadow, and the garden shape the living experience.

The Heart of the Design – Two Patios
The two patios are more than spatial voids; they are living rooms under the sky. In winter, they invite sunlight deep into the home, while in summer, the reflecting pool cools the air and fills the space with a gentle murmur. These courtyards blur the boundaries between inside and outside, ensuring that every movement through the house is connected to nature.

A Processional Entrance Sequence
The approach to the home is deliberate and ceremonial. A long white wall leads visitors to a shaded porch framed by wooden slats. An elongated ramp rises almost imperceptibly, narrowing as the light dims, creating a gradual transition from brightness to shadow. Inside, filtered light from the patios guides movement toward the main living area, where the space opens up and is bathed in natural light.

Orientation, Light, and Comfort
Every decision reflects the pursuit of essential qualities—proper orientation, serene proportions, and honest materials. Bedrooms face east to greet the morning sun and are slightly lowered to create an intimate connection with the garden. This shift in level also enhances thermal comfort during hot months.

Life Around the Main Patio
The living and dining areas embrace the central courtyard and extend to a generous south-facing porch. This space shields the interior from excessive sunlight while offering a seamless way of living between indoors and outdoors. The roof folds with geometric precision, gathering and softening daylight throughout the day.

Elevated Study with Panoramic Views
Above the main volume sits the study — a suspended retreat visually connected to surrounding oaks and granite outcrops. The floating metal staircase with wooden treads leading to it is an architectural centerpiece, hanging from the structure without direct supports. It marks the vertical core of the house, guiding movement while maintaining openness.

Materials of Time and Permanence
The palette is harmonious and enduring: white-rendered walls, warm pine wood, and Moroccan hand-fired clay tiles laid by skilled artisans. This crafted floor, unique in texture and tone, took weeks to complete and stands as a true jewel of the home. In contrast, the prefabricated metal roof structure was installed swiftly, demonstrating precision and efficiency.

An Architecture of Restraint and Connection
Rosa María House does not seek to dominate its surroundings. Instead, it integrates with its environment, allowing light, seasons, and human life to define its presence. Through quiet restraint and the timeless principles of courtyard house design, it becomes a space meant to be lived in, not merely looked at.
