Located in the heart of Ondiep, a densely built working-class neighborhood in Utrecht, the new De Boemerang Primary School by EVA Architecten stands out as a thoughtful and human-centric addition to the community. Designed with a deep respect for nature, neighborhood identity, and educational functionality, the school becomes more than a place of learning—it acts as a green, vibrant, and welcoming space for students and locals alike.

Urban Integration with a Sustainable Vision

Ondiep’s urban character is dominated by hard surfaces and minimal green space. In response, the architects envisioned the school not only as a building but as a tool for urban renewal. By preserving two monumental trees in the rear schoolyard and introducing green spaces at both front and back, the school becomes a much-needed oasis in a highly paved area.

Set back from the street, the building creates a forecourt with greenery, offering students a soft and safe buffer from the city. The orthogonal brick façade integrates seamlessly with the surrounding residential structures, while deep-set windows double as planters, allowing vegetation to form part of the architecture.

A Human-Scaled, Nature-Driven Courtyard

Behind the school lies a redesigned square that gently wraps around the preserved trees. The rear façade is curvilinear and clad in warm wood, introducing a playful, approachable character. This soft architectural language defines a friendly schoolyard that accommodates various age groups and encourages spontaneous interaction.

By creating varied spaces along the meandering façade, the school encourages outdoor play, quiet corners, and connection with nature—all while maintaining a strong sense of safety and scale for young children.

Heart of the School: The Boemerang Café

At the center of the school is the Boemerang Café—a dynamic and multifunctional space where school life meets community life. This central hub acts as the school’s living room, where events, meetings, and communal activities take place. Connected to a flexible playroom via folding glass walls, this space easily adapts for larger events and functions.

From the café, one can access the classrooms through naturally lit corridors, where voids and visual connections help children navigate and feel grounded. Widened hallways offer informal learning nooks and concentration spots, reflecting modern ideas of flexible education.

Material Palette and Interiors

The interiors of De Boemerang Primary School are intentionally modest and calm, using natural wood tones, clean lines, and soft colors. This minimalist approach creates a soothing environment that supports concentration, reduces overstimulation, and provides a blank canvas for students’ imaginations.

The building also incorporates high-performance materials and daylighting strategies, ensuring both durability and comfort throughout the seasons.

Architecture with Purpose

De Boemerang Primary School is more than an educational building—it’s a community catalyst, a green lung for the neighborhood, and a child-centered environment that puts well-being, sustainability, and learning first. EVA Architecten has succeeded in creating a school that is welcoming, adaptable, and rooted in its social and environmental context.
