Designing for Mental Wellness through Circular Architecture
Vita Beatha Center blends circular architecture with mental wellness, creating healing spaces rooted in nature, safety, and human connection.
Project by Hosein Daryabari | Shortlisted Entry – Live Laugh Love 2020
In the pursuit of spaces that foster healing, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing, Hosein Daryabari's shortlisted entry for the Live Laugh Love 2020 competition redefines how architectural form can shape mental health experiences. Titled Vita Beatha Center, the proposal uses the enduring language of circular architecture to create a mental health center deeply embedded in its natural and social context.

Embracing the Circle as a Symbol of Care
The plan centers around a network of interlocking circular structures, echoing the historical towers of ancient cities. These round forms are not merely aesthetic—they symbolize protection, safety, and a sense of unity. According to research cited in the project, circles align with the human eye's natural perception and have even been linked to higher levels of happiness.
Juror Eleena Jamil noted this resemblance: "There is a vernacular feel (castle-like) internally and externally... the building could do with smaller intimate spaces for visitors. Great site analysis though!" The intentional use of curvature enhances the psychological comfort of users, especially those experiencing emotional distress.
Functionality Rooted in Emotion
This isn’t just a form-driven project. The spatial arrangement and program distribution reflect a strong functional analysis. Juror Juanjo Otero praised this quality: "Care functional analysis and implantation in place. Landscaped lattice solution very interesting." From clinics and lobbies to dance, music, and yoga spaces, each zone is strategically positioned to support different forms of healing—through activity, reflection, or interaction.
Nature, Light, and Sensory Comfort
Set among cherry trees and surrounded by soft grass hills, the center invites users to wander, pause, and breathe. Paths are layered with orientation logic and circular extrusions that enhance intuitive navigation. Transparent materials, open courtyards, and fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces make the architecture feel alive and responsive.
The sustainable strategies integrated into the structure are equally thoughtful:
- Transparent solar cells for energy efficiency
- Heat recovery ventilation to reduce energy loss
- Smart roof curtains to control light penetration
- Rainwater harvesting for irrigation and reuse
A Space to Live, Laugh, and Love
The Vita Beatha Center does more than house clinical programs. It creates an emotionally resonant atmosphere for healing. Through circular architecture, the project unites form, function, and feeling into one cohesive vision. From its castle-like volumes to its sensory-rich courtyards, the center sets a benchmark for how architecture for mental wellness can look and feel.
As people move through its corridors, share coffee in its shaded courtyards, or join in a painting or music session, the building quietly affirms its central message: spaces that heal must also care.
