Dune House by BNLA Architecten
Dune House by BNLA Architecten blends modern design with natural materials, large windows, and serene interiors, harmonizing architecture with Ameland’s dunes.
A contemporary holiday retreat in harmony with Ameland’s dune landscape
The Dune House by BNLA Architecten is a striking holiday residence situated in the pristine dune landscape of Ameland, one of the few islands in the Netherlands. Completed in 2021, this 275 m² home seamlessly fuses modern architecture with the raw beauty of its natural surroundings, offering a unique living experience where nature, tranquility, and design converge.

Architecture Inspired by Nature
The design concept centers around a fusion of nature and architecture. Surrounded by dense forest and shifting sand dunes, the house reflects its environment through its spatial organization, materials, and form. Large windows across the façade blur the boundary between inside and outside, inviting natural light deep into the interior and framing ever-changing views of the landscape.
By experimenting with different levels and light play, the architects created a dynamic interior atmosphere that resonates with the typical dune topography. The result is a home that not only adapts to its site but also celebrates it.

Material Expression – A Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity
The exterior of the Dune House is defined by its robust material palette. Burnt wood cladding combined with a thatched roof gives the house a resilient, tactile presence while responding to local building requirements. Instead of seeing this as a restriction, BNLA transformed it into a defining feature, turning the residence into a contemporary yet timeless object.
Inside, the atmosphere shifts toward calmness and lightness. In collaboration with interior designers Ina Matt, the interiors embrace soft tones, natural textures, and wooden structural details, creating a warm contrast to the rugged exterior. The exposed timber roof construction enhances spatial height and openness, while playful floor layouts connected by stairs and voids foster a sense of discovery throughout the home.

Living in Connection with the Landscape
The Dune House is more than a holiday home—it is a retreat that allows residents to immerse in nature without sacrificing comfort or luxury. Every element, from the orientation of windows to the careful layering of interior spaces, has been designed to encourage a slower pace of living and a deeper connection with the surrounding dune ecosystem.
Through its minimalist design, respect for local traditions, and innovative use of natural materials, BNLA Architecten has crafted a project that balances modern holiday living with ecological sensitivity.
