Exelmans Michel-Ange Building by Stefan Architecture: A Harmonious Urban Landmark in Paris
A dynamic ten-story building in Paris, blending modern curves, sustainable design, natural light, and urban integration by Stefan Architecture.
A Contemporary Architectural Gem in the 16th Arrondissement
Located at the intersection of Boulevard Exelmans and Rue Michel-Ange in the prestigious 16th arrondissement of Paris, the Exelmans Michel-Ange Building by Stefan Architecture seamlessly integrates into its historic urban fabric. This ten-story mixed-use development occupies a strategic corner plot, positioned between two contrasting structures: a classic Parisian building from 1912 by Lucien Demenais and a modernist tower from 1972 by Pierre Puccinelli. The design challenge was to create an architectural dialogue that bridges these distinct styles while enhancing the city’s urban landscape.

Architectural Concept: A Fusion of Elegance and Dynamism
The architectural language of the Exelmans Michel-Ange Building is defined by the continuity of horizontal lines that extend along the adjacent streets. Its curved façade, softened by undulating lines and dynamic volumetric projections, reduces the imposing presence of a corner high-rise.
At street level, the transparent ground floor, supported by structural pillars, houses a restaurant, creating an inviting public space. The upper floors are characterized by asymmetrical façade elements, a mix of convex and concave curves, and strategically placed openings that bring a sense of movement to the structure. The Krion-clad exterior, with its matte limestone-like texture, references Haussmannian architecture, adding a layer of timeless sophistication to the modern design.

Maximizing Natural Light and Connectivity
A defining feature of this project is its emphasis on natural light. Large floor-to-ceiling windows, aligned with the building’s curved silhouette, allow sunlight to flood the residential interiors. The inclusion of glass railings on terraces fosters an intimate connection between interior spaces and the urban environment, offering panoramic views of the surrounding neighborhood.
Beyond aesthetics, the technical execution of the building was a crucial factor. Situated near Exelmans metro station, the structure required advanced engineering solutions to counteract vibrations from underground tunnels and sanitation infrastructure. A special anti-vibration system was implemented, ensuring optimal comfort for residents on the upper floors by minimizing perceptible movement.

Sustainable and Inclusive Living Spaces
The Exelmans Michel-Ange Building incorporates a diverse housing program, catering to both social housing and private residences. The first two floors are dedicated to affordable housing, reinforcing Paris’s commitment to urban inclusivity. The upper levels, from the third to the tenth floor, accommodate luxury apartments with unobstructed views.
The top floor stands out with its exposed metal structure, featuring a green roof that enhances sustainability and promotes biodiversity. This exclusive penthouse level is surrounded by a private terrace and boasts an outdoor swimming pool, offering a unique urban oasis in the heart of Paris.

A Visionary Addition to Parisian Architecture
With its fluid design, innovative materiality, and integration of green spaces, the Exelmans Michel-Ange Building by Stefan Architecture successfully bridges the gap between historical and contemporary architecture. The project exemplifies a modern Parisian aesthetic, proving that sustainable, elegant, and contextually aware architecture can thrive in a dense urban environment.
