The Paridaens School Campus in Leuven was given a fresh identity through a thoughtfully designed new wing by LAVA Architecten, establishing a visual anchor and clear orientation for the campus. Rising on the side wall, the five-story extension highlights the building’s presence, while the nearby Dijle River was revitalized with a green bank, walking paths, and cycling lanes, fostering connectivity between the adjacent Janseniushof residential area and the city center.

This strategic expansion aligns with the Broad School Concept, emphasizing multifunctional, flexible learning spaces that support modern education practices. The double-height polyvalent space, located in the basement alongside the river path, is designed for versatility and accessibility. Meanwhile, the rooftop playground provides outdoor space for older students, integrating recreational needs within the compact building footprint.

Masterplan and Design Strategy

LAVA Architecten’s long-term masterplan for the campus guided the design of the new wing. Acting as the campus centerpiece, the building ensures seamless access across all levels, enhancing lateral circulation. The programmatic layout places the kindergarten on the ground floor, primary school on the first floor, and middle school on the second to fourth floors.

The campus features structures from multiple historical periods, resulting in a fragmented spatial organization over time. Through compact and cohesive design, the new wing reconciles these differences, bringing clarity, aeration, and cohesion to the site. The former primary school was demolished to accommodate the 4,550 m² new wing, which now serves as a connector for horizontal circulation, unifying the campus’s educational spaces.

Educational Design and Innovation

The architecture of the Paridaens School extension focuses on flexibility, modularity, and interactivity. Classrooms are designed to adapt to multiple configurations, supporting team teaching, group work, and individual study. Spacious circulation areas act as informal learning zones, while extended windowsills function as digital workstations with integrated power, fostering independent and collaborative learning.

By emphasizing spatial solutions rather than dictating educational methods, the design encourages an adaptable, future-ready environment that enhances the overall learning experience. Modern technology integration allows students to engage directly with the curriculum, making the campus a model for innovative educational architecture in Belgium.
