A Contemporary Social Hub on Düsseldorf's University Campus

Designed by renowned firm J. Mayer H. Architects, the FOM University Pavilion introduces a dynamic new layer to the FOM Hochschulzentrum campus in Düsseldorf, Germany. Completed in 2023, this compact yet expressive structure functions as an architectural annex, serving as a multifunctional pavilion that supports seminars, lectures, workshops, and social gatherings. The project occupies a 100-square-meter footprint, thoughtfully nestled into the lush greenery of the Stadtpark, in harmony with the surrounding natural topography and the renatured Duessel River.

Context and Setting: An Urban Campus Within a Rewilded Landscape

The FOM Hochschulzentrum campus spans 8,000 square meters within Quartier Central, an energetic district repurposed from a former cargo railway yard in Düsseldorf-Derendorf. Five years after the completion of the main university building, the pavilion was conceived as a social and academic extension. It establishes a bridge between built form and parkland, offering a tranquil space for student interaction and academic activities.

Positioned at the campus’s outer edge, the pavilion engages directly with the soft edges of the Stadtpark, embracing the rewilded landscape and creating an inviting interface between nature and education.

Architectural Design: Floating Roof and Ground-Integrated Form

With its cantilevered floating roof and organic geometry, the pavilion appears to hover lightly over the terrain. Beneath its expansive roof, shaded outdoor terraces offer gathering space, while inside, flexible interiors support multiple academic functions. The pavilion's form subtly snuggles into the landscape, echoing the surrounding park’s undulating lines and providing a sculptural cap to the underground garage beneath.

This interplay of mass and void, roof and earth, demonstrates J. Mayer H. Architects’ continued exploration of fluid forms, topographic integration, and material expression.

Function and Experience: A Multipurpose Social and Learning Space

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the FOM Pavilion serves as a social condenser—a place where ideas, people, and disciplines converge. It expands the university’s infrastructure with adaptable interiors that support everything from formal lectures to informal meetings, all while maintaining a deep connection to the landscape.

The building’s façade features expansive glazing, allowing for natural light penetration and direct views into the park, enhancing both the spatial quality and the user's connection to nature.
