Designed as a serene coastal retreat, the Futtsu Weekend House by Atelier MEME offers a harmonious balance between architecture and nature. Located along the picturesque coastline near Tokyo Bay, this weekend house in Japan serves as a tranquil escape from the demands of city life. Perched gently on a hillside, the residence provides panoramic views of the vast seascape and, on clear days, a majestic sightline to Mount Fuji. The opposite side opens onto lush, forested mountains, embracing the house with a sense of natural serenity.

The architects prioritized a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces, ensuring that every glance invites interaction with the surrounding environment. Instead of rigidly controlling boundaries through walls or precise window placements, Atelier MEME embraced a more fluid approach, allowing natural sightlines to shape the experience.

Architectural Concept: Expansive Roof Design and Open Interiors

A central feature of the design is the innovative roof structure, divided into four elongated sections that stretch toward the ground. On the front-facing side, the roof dramatically extends over the yard and parking area, forming a generous covered space beneath the eaves. The area between the gable-side eaves and the second-floor level functions as an open void, enhancing visual permeability and spatial fluidity.

Beneath this dynamic roof, the architects created a single cohesive room, where the upper structure—exposed beams, rafters, and sheathing—contrasts beautifully with the lower structure of floors and walls finished in traditional building materials. This juxtaposition emphasizes the architectural drama of the roof, while fostering a sense of intimacy and openness simultaneously.

From this central space, residents can enjoy ever-changing views of the sea, mountains, and rocky terrain. The design is heightened by ambient natural sounds: the gentle lapping of waves, the rustle of foliage, and birdsong, all enhancing the house’s immersive sensory experience.

A Weekend Retreat for Leisure and Connection

The Futtsu Weekend House is more than just a home; it is a destination for rest, creativity, and community. The client frequents the house nearly every weekend, sometimes enjoying quiet contemplation while gazing at the sea, and at other times hosting music-filled gatherings with friends. This retreat is designed to accommodate both solitude and social interaction, offering a versatile space that balances privacy, openness, and connection to nature.

Through careful consideration of site orientation, roof articulation, and interior openness, Atelier MEME has created a weekend house that celebrates the natural beauty of Futtsu. This project exemplifies modern Japanese residential design, emphasizing coastal living, sustainable material use, and architectural harmony with the landscape.
