“Glories Square 60: Innovative Social Housing by SV60 Arquitectos in Barcelona”
Glories Square 60 by SV60 Arquitectos is modular, flexible social housing in Barcelona, fostering community, privacy, energy efficiency, and urban integration.
Innovative Social Housing in Barcelona’s Urban Fabric
Glories Square 60 Social Housing Units by SV60 Arquitectos represents a forward-thinking approach to urban living, combining rational design, flexibility, and social engagement. Located in Barcelona’s vibrant Les Glories district, this 8,940 m² project redefines social housing through carefully considered spatial relationships, climatic responsiveness, and community-oriented design.

The architects envisioned a permeable and adaptable building volume, pierced by multiple voids that cross from one façade to another, connecting with interior courtyards. This sculpted and carved architectural language ensures that each unit enjoys natural light, ventilation, and privacy while simultaneously fostering social interaction among residents. The design integrates seamlessly with Barcelona’s iconic "ensanche," positioning itself as a quiet yet functional addition to the urban fabric.

Plinth and Public Connectivity
A large plinth at the base of the project strategically resolves topographical challenges while organizing circulation and access. Acting as a dense yet carved structural element, the plinth accommodates diverse uses and establishes strong connections with public outdoor spaces, including the Les Encants Market and Glories Square. By embracing the inner courtyard, the design creates a new civic space, fully equipped for recreational and communal activities, reinforcing social cohesion within the neighborhood.

Flexible Housing Modules
The residential units are based on a modular 3.00 x 3.00m system, optimizing floor plans relative to the number of bedrooms. This modularity allows each home to adapt to its inhabitants’ needs, with rooms capable of expanding or contracting using the climatic gallery façade. The varied arrangement of gaps, terraces, patios, and voids enhances spatial continuity, strengthens internal relationships between dwellings, and improves the overall energy performance of the complex.
Through thoughtful design, the Glories Square housing units strike a delicate balance between individual privacy and communal living, embodying a model of sustainable, functional, and socially conscious architecture.

Sustainable and Community-Oriented Design
SV60 Arquitectos’ approach highlights urban integration, energy efficiency, and social inclusivity. The project’s perforated façade and strategic voids not only regulate natural light and airflow but also encourage visual and physical interaction between neighbors, creating a vibrant residential ecosystem.
By embracing a rational, flexible framework, the Glories Square 60 Social Housing Units demonstrate that social housing can be beautiful, functional, and responsive to both urban and environmental contexts.
