Grid House by Estudio VA Arquitectos: A Brickwork Grid Embracing Light and Form in La Plata
Grid House blends brick lattice, concrete, and light-filled patios to create a compact, luminous home in suburban La Plata, Argentina.
Nestled on the expanding outskirts of La Plata, Argentina, Grid House is one of three residences designed by Estudio VA arquitectos within a newly emerging urban development. With a footprint of just 104 square meters, this compact residence achieves a striking architectural identity through thoughtful material articulation and spatial design.

A Grid of Brick and Light
At the heart of the project's identity lies its morphological composition of solid brick volumes, arranged in a distinctive grid pattern. This brick lattice is not merely structural or ornamental—it serves as a permeable skin that modulates light, softens views, and invites air circulation while ensuring privacy. In selected areas, the grid breaks apart, creating controlled voids that welcome daylight and animate the facade with nuanced shadows throughout the day.

Concrete as a Structural and Visual Hinge
The horizontal bands of exposed concrete function as a structural hinge, delineating a visual and material boundary between the grounded brick base and the lighter upper roof volumes. This layering emphasizes the horizontality of the structure while enhancing the tactile contrast between materials.

Playful Roof Geometry and Light Capture
Above, a sculptural roofscape introduces a play of inclinations that balance aesthetics with function. One slope draws attention to the main entrance, while the opposing angles open the interior spaces to northwestern light, enriching the living areas with natural illumination. This light-responsive geometry reflects the architects' desire to integrate solar orientation into spatial experience.

Indoor-Outdoor Continuity through Patios
The plan unfolds around a series of differentiated patios, each designed in direct response to the functional needs of adjoining rooms. These outdoor extensions act as spatial buffers and light wells, completing the interior volumes through their adjacent voids. Every room is framed by its corresponding exterior space, reinforcing a rhythmic dialogue between solids and voids.

A Contemporary Brick House Rooted in Context
Though modest in scale, Grid House represents a deeply contextual response to the suburban expansion of La Plata. Its architectural language blends the local tradition of brickwork with modernist clarity and environmental sensitivity, creating a minimalist house design that is both grounded and luminous.
