Guadalajara Ecosphere Urban Park
A Sustainable Oasis in the Heart of the City
The Ecosphere Guadalajara Park, a winning entry in the Ecosphere competition designed by Tomas Sterancak, offers a compelling vision for transforming a neglected urban space into a thriving community hub. Situated in the heart of Guadalajara, Mexico, this ambitious project addresses the need for inclusive, sustainable, and engaging public spaces within the bustling city. By integrating innovative design solutions with a deep respect for the local context, the Ecosphere Urban Park promises to become a model for future urban regeneration projects.

Addressing the Challenges of a Neglected Urban Space
The site, an abandoned field at the intersection of major traffic arteries, presented several challenges. It lacked connectivity to the surrounding residential and commercial areas, suffered from a fragmented design, and lacked essential amenities for the community. Recognizing these issues, Sterancak's proposal tackles them head-on, aiming to create a unified and vibrant park that caters to the diverse needs of its users.

Creating an Inclusive and Multifunctional Oasis
The Ecosphere Urban Park is designed as an inclusive space, welcoming people of all ages, abilities, and interests. Its diverse programming includes a playground, skatepark, multipurpose sports field, public green spaces, a small chapel, public restrooms, and a central public square that serves as a vibrant meeting point. This multifunctional approach ensures that the park has something to offer everyone, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Prioritizing Sustainability and Biodiversity
Sustainability is at the core of the Ecosphere Urban Park's design. The project incorporates rainwater retention solutions, such as a water tower and rain gardens, to mitigate the impact of seasonal floods and enhance the natural habitat. The landscape design, featuring a diverse array of plants and undulating terrain, promotes biodiversity and creates a visually appealing environment. Furthermore, the use of volcanic gravel for surfacing minimizes dust and reduces maintenance needs.

Respecting the Past and Embracing the Future
The Ecosphere Urban Park seamlessly integrates the site's history and cultural heritage into its design. Three artificial mounds, inspired by the pre-Columbian archaeological site of Los Guachimontones, provide a unique visual element and enhance the park's landscape diversity. The existing chapel, an important landmark for the local community, is preserved and integrated into the new design. This sensitive approach ensures that the park respects the past while embracing a forward-looking vision for the future.

Promoting Connectivity and Accessibility
The park's design prioritizes connectivity and accessibility. It establishes clear pedestrian pathways and integrates with the existing public transportation network. Additionally, new parking plots are created on the northern side of the area to improve accessibility for those arriving by car. This thoughtful approach ensures that the park is easily accessible to all members of the community.
