Harrierfall Hostel: A Unique Hostel Design That Merges Danger with Tranquility
Exploring Harrierfall Hostel's unique design blending historical context with modern hospitality near the Great Wall.
At the foot of the Great Wall at Shuiguan in Huairou, Beijing, the Harrierfall Hostel emerges as a testament to unique hostel design, blending the thrill of "danger" with the serenity of rural hospitality. Designed by DL Atelier in 2021 and covering an area of 207 m², this project stands out for its innovative approach to integrating architecture with its historic and natural surroundings. This unique hostel design not only respects the original character of three existing houses but also introduces a new way of experiencing the Great Wall's majestic presence.

The Concept Behind Harrierfall Hostel
Harrierfall Hostel is not just a place to stay; it is an experience designed to break away from daily life. The architecture serves as a medium to engage guests with the concept of living in the "here and now," akin to a theme park where reality and fantasy playfully intersect. The proximity to the Great Wall, a symbol of historical significance and natural beauty, adds a unique layer to this concept, integrating the idea of "danger" into the design to provoke thought and excitement.

Act I: Harrierfall
Named after the Harrier Castle, an extension of the Great Wall, Harrierfall Hostel is a hidden gem at the end of a narrow lane. The design cleverly incorporates elements of surprise and discovery, inviting guests to engage with the space in a manner that is both comforting and exhilarating

Scene 1: Leave a Light
A small attic that glows like a beacon in the night symbolizes the warmth and welcoming spirit of the hostel. This feature is inspired by the notion of home as a place of comfort and connection, reinforcing the hostel's aim to provide a unique living experience.

Scene 2: Reclining and Watching
The architectural design emphasizes a connection with the environment, offering stunning views of the Great Wall. The use of solid wood and strategic positioning of furniture and windows fosters a sense of intimacy with the landscape, inviting guests to relax and immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings.

Scene 3: Invitation to Ancient Locust Tree
Incorporating natural elements into the design, the hostel invites the ancient locust tree into the yard, creating a living art piece that connects guests with the area's rich history and natural beauty. This thoughtful integration of architecture and nature highlights the hostel's commitment to offering a unique and immersive experience.

Scene 4: Climbing the Dangerous Building Alone
The design challenges traditional notions of safety and comfort by introducing a staircase that doubles as a piece of art. Inspired by ancient craftsmanship and designed to resemble the ruins of a collapsed house, this feature adds an element of "danger" to the experience, encouraging guests to engage with their surroundings more consciously and fully.

The Wholeness after Destruction
Harrierfall Hostel represents a unique hostel design that balances the excitement of danger with the tranquility of a rural retreat. The project's innovative approach to integrating architecture with its environment and history offers guests a one-of-a-kind experience that is both thought-provoking and deeply calming. Through this balance, the hostel not only provides a place to stay but also an opportunity to reflect on the beauty and complexity of our interactions with the world around us.
