This project, designed by vanOmmeren-architecten and architectuurcentrale Thijs Asselbergs, features 324 residential units, providing a variety of housing types, including social rental apartments, medium-priced units, and private-sector apartments. A Vision for Sustainable, Affordable Housing
The Havenkade social housing project, comprising 164 social rental units, 38 medium-priced rental apartments, and 122 private-sector homes, aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing in Nijmegen. The design, created by leading architects Thijs Asselbergs and Joeri van Ommeren, prioritizes functionality without compromising on aesthetic value, ensuring that social housing is designed with the same thoughtfulness as other housing types. This approach aims to create lasting value through modular and standardized construction methods, providing a model for future housing projects.

Urban Design and Architectural Excellence
As part of the larger urban transformation plan for Nijmegen’s former industrial district, Havenkade integrates seamlessly into its surroundings while offering distinct architectural elements. The design features two-story entrances that link the new city street with the interior courtyard, contributing to the site’s open and welcoming atmosphere. The external façade is robust, employing masonry as a key element, while the interior courtyard embraces a neutral, green design. This blend of strength and tranquility supports diverse vegetation, fostering a sense of connection with nature.
The integrated development strategy maximizes the benefits of shared resources, including mobility infrastructure, landscaping, and a cohesive architectural ensemble. By combining two separate buildings into one unified block, the architects have created a sense of harmony between the public and private spaces within the development.
