Located in the breathtaking Andean plateau of Calacoto, Bolivia, the Health Tourism Module by DUARQUI SRL exemplifies sustainable, ecological, and culturally sensitive design. Completed in 2023, this innovative project spans 13 m² and demonstrates a thoughtful integration of local materials, ergonomic planning, and climate-responsive architecture.

The design’s core philosophy is rooted in modularity and adaptability. Constructed using pink rock stone, concrete floors, rustic bronze faucets, and pine wood doors, the module withstands the harsh Andean weather, including extreme winds and freezing temperatures. Its orientation and access openings are carefully calibrated to maximize sunlight while minimizing exposure to cold, creating a naturally comfortable environment for visitors.

This module functions as a sanitary and health tourism facility, part of a larger ecotourism initiative by the Patacalamachi City of Stone Ecotourism Association. It accommodates up to 25 visitors per session and ensures minimal environmental impact. Semi-skilled local workers assembled the structure without heavy machinery, preserving the natural landscape while strengthening community engagement and traditional construction methods.

The bathroom units feature suspended stone sinks, bronze fixtures, and ergonomically designed layouts that support easy cleaning and low maintenance. The module’s modular grid adheres to anthropometric standards, ensuring comfort and functionality for all visitors. Importantly, the project safeguards the biodiversity of the site, protecting native plants, birds, and groundwater, while promoting the sustainable practices of the local community.

Its natural materials and restrained form ensure the architecture blends seamlessly into the Andean landscape. By combining ecological sensitivity, cultural relevance, and ergonomic innovation, DUARQUI SRL has created a model of sustainable tourism architecture that exemplifies the future of responsible design in extreme environments.
